combating the forces of evil - watermarking!!!

Now I know this will come as a shock to some of you, but there really are people out there in the world who will... ahem... "borrow" our photos right off our websites. Never mind right click protection... they can get 'em. Recently, while hanging around with some sailors who had been drinking (gasp!), two different people both told me that they've created Photoshop masks that quite neatly remove my watermark. :huh

Sooo... I got back to my desk and got back to work. Now I don't want the watermark to be so distracting that people won't bother looking at the pictures. I only want it to hurt their eyes just enough and be difficult enough to remove that if they want it, they'll BUY IT! :thumb

Here's the old:

And here's the new:

I like the new one 'cause they can no longer just mask it and fuss with the black point or whatever to remove it. Now they have to actually clone data into the white areas. But in some cases, like the example above, that still wouldn't be so hard--most of the watermarked area is sky and sails. I need to give potential image snatchers MORE PAIN. :evil So how about repeating my logo three times from top to bottom, covering the whole horizontal frame area? That would be more effective also at covering at least more of the center of vertical shots too. Or maybe I could add some white diagonal striping outside the logo.

Any better ideas are most welcome!

(Oh... and I think the answer is no, but is there any way to automatically apply different watermarks to vertical vs. horizontal images?)

Make a photoshop action for H / V ....then all you have to do is run appropriate action per photo and there may even be a way to batch run the action.....but I am not sure.

Instead of white why not vary all the WM lines with rainbow colors. Like a gradient.

Yeah--thanks, Art. That would probably work... 'cept I prefer to let SmugMug handle my watermarking.

Not a bad idea at all. Maybe not in the white area, but if I fill the central area with a funky blend of colors, then fade them out to 30% opacity, they'd be less visually distracting but a real pain to remove. I'll play around with that.

and if the colors varied like the rainbow gradient it'd be a bitch with each
    adjacent pixel a different color.
