Lightning at night

I'm bored out of my skull right now, the weather hasn't been very nice and I'm kinda done sitting around.
So I'm posting old lightning shots as a quick fix :lol3
Best one from 2006:
This one topped out 2007. I shot this from a high roof top thinking "a hit there would kill me, hit over there and I need a hearing aid, way over it's gonna be a great shot..." The best hit was even further away...
And this one is the best I've got yet this summer. Shot using the very same camera as the previous two, but this time modified for IR. I've posted shot on it's own before, but I'll include it because it's cool
All are night time long exposures.

Thank you Awais
I'll have to admit to missing the reference, who's Azlan?

Actually i am also not sure about name. He was a lion in "Chronicals of Narnia" and use to see the TV series when i was little kid.

:skippy Everyone has the right to be stupid, but some people just abuse the privilege :dgrin
THe second one though is quite interesting because shooting from this distance allowed you to capture what happend above the lightning : I can guess a higher flash between the upper clouds and that's quite interesting (scientific point of view)...
I've read something about still little known flashes far more powerfull than the earth/cloud lightnings that have been "discovered" lately... And your shooting conditions were almost perfect to observe those ones !

I see now, the great lion is Aslan
I was confused because a search for "Azlan" came up with a sultan, a squash player and a large IT company
I should go to the library and pick those books up...

Thanks! The first seems to be the one to catch the imaginations of people and give 'em a wiggle

Thanks!
Are you referring to 'positive lightning', that strikes between the ground and the top of the cloud, with considerable energy?
I'm not sure Finnish weather can generate that much bang
I'll keep an eye out for those

Maybe you can come stand on my delete key while I take a break.
Thanks
Sorry, can't help you with the deleting. The sun just showed up and I've gotta get out

No, I'm refferring to phenomenons known as sprites or blue jets... they happen in the upper atmoshpere above the cloud, and have been studied for about 20 years only. Your second shot was perfect to eventually see them cos you can see above the clouds as well... Ground/cloud lightnings (the usual ones) seem to be ridiculous compared to these new flashes...
OK I found the links that will explain it better than I can do in english ^^

Actually, the thunder cloud extends all the to the top of the image there. That cell was 10-20 kilometers away, bit close to see what's going on above it for the sprites - I think. (if they really do go up to 75(!) km above the cloud I might have seen one if they were there)
And it takes a positive lightning strike to trigger a sprite making them rather rare. Still, they are something to look for
I remember a friend telling me I should try to catch a sprite when I mentioned I was going to modify my old camera for IR. One day...

But I do like watching them from afar...like another state.
Thank you
If you're too much of a scaredy-cat to stand in/next to a storm yourself (and I can understand why), make the camera do it for you:
Put the camera up on a tripod, put a rain cover on it, jam a remote shutter release in the very on position and then hide under the table. Easy as pie
