The Deed is Done!!! Got my DSLR...

And the "fun" has already started!!!

I initially bought the Digtal Rebel XT with the standard kit lens...decided the standard lens was just too funky for my taste, so I upgraded today to the "Deluxe" kit that comes with a 17-85 IS USM lens. I also bought a used 75-300 IS USM lens and a brand new 28-135 IS USM lens that I plan to use for shooting portraits* and maybe as an all around if I'm shooting where I'll be wanting more zoom than the 17-85 can deliver. *(I'm going to be shooting a *creative* -as in natural settings in natural light- portrait session this coming week for a teenage gal that's graduating high school, and if it pans out I may have other jobs coming my way). The next lens on my short list will be a used 50mm (prime) macro lens from the same person I bought the 75-300 from. And so it begins... :rofl

Everyone who told me "don't buy the camera, it's the glass you need to consider!" was right, of course! So I remembered that mantra when I was tempted to get a 20D instead. I figure I can upgrade in a year or two and have the XT as a back-up, so in that regard, I think I made the right decision...for now, because I was able to afford to get some decent lenses to go along with my camera purchase right off the bat. I'd rather have to wait for the "better" camera than for extra lenses.

So, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it, LOL!

Cheers,
~Nee :rolleyes

    Congrats and have fun.

I would reconsider using the 28-135 as a portrait lens though. As a carry around it's good, but a prime is a much better choice. I personally have been using the 100 macro a lot for portrait shots, but an 85 1.8 or the 50 1.4 should do fine also.

    Yeah, I know...Primes are primo~
But money wise, they'll have to wait in the wings for now. I will be getting a used 50mm prime macro (and portrait?) lens soon, so there's hope for me yet, Laughing.gif!

Patience guys, patience...I just got the camera today! I'm in the middle of unpacking it from the box, charging the battery and putting my kit together in the bag. Forgot to mention I also snagged the battery grip that goes with the XT and an extra battery plus a ($49 cheap!) ball type tripod head to go on my (likewise cheap but functional) tripod. rolleyes1.gif

Tomorrow I'm going on a group wildflower photo shoot in the Sierra foothills (sure wish I had that 50mm now!) and hopefully will have some pics to post by Monday!

    Cheers!

I completely understand. Besides, lenses are one thing, the person taking the pictures is another. You may do wonders with the 28-135, because it is a good lens.

Have fun. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your pics.

Ya know I was >this< close to getting a Nikon D70, but those darn Canon folks had to come up with a "baby 20D" to lure me away from Nikon land, Laughing.gif! Yeah, I can see the writing is on the wall! rolleyes1.gif

We'll be seeing you (and the rest of the Dgrin gang that'll be in Yosemite) next month...can't hardly wait to get there now that I got my new goodies! See ya there~

...I think it was definitely me!!!
    rolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gif

Heck, even after buying an XT, I was still undecided...but now that I have a much better standard lens to go with it, I'm feeling all smiggerly* inside! *(it's more than excited...giddy, giggly, and fence jumping happy is more like it!)

I think I've figured out ways to get around most of the "issues" I had, so hopefully it will all be smooth sailing from now on! My hubby was so sweet...he even let me bust the budget to get some other goodies. So now, I need to hop off to bed so I don't miss the early morning wildflower shoot! Whoohoo!!!

    Andy,

Is there really that great a difference in the 50mm f/1.4 compared to the f/1.8?

I was going to say the same thing...only with the 35mm f1.4 -- but they are price a lot more than the 28-135. Perhaps the 85mm f1.8 plus the 50mm f1.8 would do for an equivalent price.

The 28-135 is to the full frame camera what the 17-85 is to the 1.6x cameras. No good reason to have both. The 17-85 is the one to keep since you have a 1.6x camera. Neither are great optical lenses. Good, but not great. Medium in quality -- but they have IS, and they are good walk around lenses. But both? No.

The 85mm f1.8 is an excellent portrait lens for head shots, babie etc. It's also a great indoor sports lens.

I wasn't the one who really put the price up there, but the camera is well worth it. I have a Rebel so there wan't any real imparitive. I just thought if for some strange reason it went for less I could buy it, sell the Rebel, and hang on longer before upgrading to a 20D.

I am sure the camera is in great shape, and I hopr you enjoy it.

Sorry I've been a bit awol here!
Thanks everyone...I'm considering returning the 28-135 as many have suggested. I've already got my eye on a used 50mm lens from the same person I bought my 75-300 from. Haven't had a chance to really put my new camera and lenses through their paces yet...we've had our grandson with us the whole time and he gets impatient when "granny" is taking too many pictures, Laughing.gif! Besides, it's pouring cats and dogs outside right now!!! But I'll get some new pics posted as soon as possible...I promise!

    Cheers!
