Egrets Great and Small

Well 4Labs lead me to believe that Egrets were a favorite around here so I figured I would share a few of the beauties here.

These are all just quick web crops from a batch of shots I recovered from my recycle bin (I guess that means I was not overly pleased with them) but they seem to be ok for web sized use. Personally I would have liked to have had a tripod with me to capture a little more detail but the afternoon I shot these I was sort of playing hooky from work and just sort of found myself at a local wetlands.

Egrets and Herons are both very common in our wetlands along with Stilts and American Avocets. The Avocets are particularly interesting once they start to nest. The distraction displays they can put on are great fun to observe and to shoot.

I find birds to be one of the most frustrating subjects I have ever tried to shoot, I just never seem to capture the detail I expect in my bird shots and have yet to take a bird shot in the wild that I was trul happy with.

If anyone is interested I will also include an Avocet shot here along with a link to some shots of them at the end of this post. Ironically they were taken in the first couple of days that I had my D-70

Anywise here a a couple teasers and the rest can be found in a This Smug Mug Gallery

I figured someone here might enjoy them though so here they are

Thanks Ed, I really enjoyed your galleries, some great diversity in your work. Love the Whale on the bait ball and the Mule Deer buk is quite impressive.

Good captures Bobby especially the avocet. The agrets are a bit over exposed. You really have to watch your exposure on them.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

    Welcome Bobby!
    Good to have you here.
I really like the avocet....way cool.
Yep, good captures on the egrets. They do a good job keeping us entertained annnnnnd teach us about white on white exposure. Easy process to understand, just hard to do in the heat of the moment.

Glad to see a new so.cal. guy too!!! thumb.gif

Boy that is a tough question there are so many great places within an hours drive of my home.

I guess though Laguna and Venice would both rank high on the list for simple walk around stuff

San Diego and Downtown LA (China Town, Olvera Street) are also great

I have wetlands just 5 minutes from my office in Irvine. Then there are the CA. Missions (3 within 1 hour of me) all the rest of the coastla towns and I still have not even mentioned anything inland at all. :)

Thanks Harry, I agree about the exposure, that is why they were retrieved from the Recycle bin. I find birds in general to be difficult models (girls in bikinis are more my speed) But these all white buggers are without a dubt one of the true challenges of photography.
