The set up...just the sun for light and a few passing clouds as a diffuser. The seed of inspiration for this came from sunita's egg shot in the last mini challenge - Thanks sunita!
Finally...my feedback on remaining entries
#2 - imax - Pins and Needles
The concept here was not bad. It really met the theme, but it fell a little
short in execution. It was overexposed and the DOF should have been
greater. An extreme close-up of almost abstract proportions may have worked well here too.
#3 - Tdcompton - Indianapolis Skyline 2008
Really very nice night shot. The colors do glow, but the image is speaking
to me of "neon" or even "stillness" much more so than "Primary" or "Pastel".
Really great image regardless.
#4 - arthill - Peach Hibiscus
Very nice soft pastels. This one easily made my first pass, but the dark
upper left corner just totally kept pulling me away. Cloning or cropping
that out would have totally pushed the pastel feel all the way for me.
#5 - fashiznitsngrins - Peter Pecked a Peck of Primary Peppers
Very cool concept and the light is serving very well to emphasize the
peppers. The brown cutting board just detracted from the message a little,
especially the light central area. A different background or a close-up of
the peppers would have really hit a home run for me. (Love the title, btw!)
#7 - WomanWithACamera - Yellow
Color is definitely the main message here and you did extremely well with
that. What little focus there is though, appears to be somewhere in the
upper part of the flower and that's just not working well. Focus on the
central area of the bloom would definitely help to keep the viewers eye
within the frame.
#8 - bfjr - Is it Safe Yet
Love this shot! Really nice feel and great crop. Just not on theme for me.
#9 - dcorrin - Red and Yellow
This one made my first pass, and color is totally here. The bug is
fantastic. Just outside of my top ten.
#12 - inetken - Maui Scents
Very nice image. Perhaps a tad dark, but I love the simplicity and
softness. Just not on theme for me.
#13 - PaulThomasMcKee - Testarossa
Red head for sure! The bold color here totally hits you and great on theme.
Technically excellent, just missing something for me and I can't quite
figure out what.
#14 - ginaellen - Waiting for love
Welcome to the challenges! Really nice image, although try to remember to
post the largest size allowed (read the Rules) as it will give your image
more impact, generally speaking. I think that if the chair had been turned
a little more toward the camera, that the rose would have then stood out
exquisitely against the black background. It also may have cut down on the
bright glare a bit too on the front of the chair.
#15 - Jamoke - My Three Forms of Sustenance
Definitely right on theme. Once again, there's something missing here that
I can't quite pinpoint. It may be in the quality of light.
#16 - douglas - Color Balance
This is one of those shots that I have seen a lot of recently, and
unfortunately I've seen much better versions. Your jello was not fully set
and therefore is not as clean as it could be. The theme was there, and the
comp was good, but unfortunately it lost impact on the technique.
#17 - Sp00ks - No title
Very nice flower shot, just no where near as strong on theme as many others.
#18 - vandana - Drink the colors responsibly
Another shot that I've seen frequently and just could have been improved by a few technical details. The glasses could have been spaced more evenly, the tops aren't as clean as possible and I find the bubbles distracting. Missed my top ten by a very slim hair because of this.
#19 - pemmett - The last drop...
Image is gone, but from what I recall, the red to me looked so much like
blood that I found the image disturbing.
#20 - Karrie McD - Jumping Through Hoops
Neat concept and on theme for sure, but the composite work has enough flaws to be distracting. Too much feathering on the selection has led to
unbelievable edges.
#22 - scas - Sun Flower
I actually really loved all the color tones in this image and I kept going
back and forth with this one. The clincher in the end, was the lack of
focus, especially on the lower flower. It just missed the mark for me
because of that.
#24 - The Hobbyist - God's Paintbox
The colors were just a little too pale here and offset by too much gray &
black to really hit home on the theme for me.
#25 - KurtPreston - Imagination
I loved what you started with here (the pastel colored alkaseltzer). But
the bird then threw it off theme for me. The fizzer shot with a little color
boost in it alone would have been stronger, I feel.
#26 - ic4u - Red attracts
There's definitely primary colors here, but the black background isn't
working for me. A bold blue instead may have pushed the whole message
further.
#27 - NikonsandVstroms - Repose
This is another shot that I kept going back and forth with. I think in the
end the cream pillow kept pulling me out of the frame.
#28 - Halite - Sail On, Sailor
Great color here, but the story wasn't there. Why is he in the water? Why
is he looking happy about standing in the water. If he's a sailor, where is
his boat? To me, technically it's a great shot, but I keep thinking he's
just standing there up to his waist in water thinking "Gee, I wish I had a
boat, but this is as close as I can get."
#29 - CAPTURED2H - Too Bee or Not
Easily in my top ten, except for the DQ.
#31 - jrnylst - Blue Lakes Basin
Very pretty scene and lovely comp. Try to go maximum size next time. Also
just outside my top ten.
#32 - Manfr3d - Fisher and Flower
Not even close on theme for me.
#33 - evoryware - I'm not Ronald
Primary is totally there, but this guy just creeps me out! Look at those
filthy gloves! Ugh!
#34 - ifocus - Splash
Very nice image. Just goes back to that literal thing in me that says
"orange is not a primary color".
#35 - quark - Soft pink Sunrise
Very pretty, but needs something to push it into "wow" mode, like a moon, or rainbow, or something along those lines.
#36 - AaronNelson - Strong Light of Influence
Very cool shot! The light overpowers the "Primary" theme for me though.
#37 - BeemerChef - Fresh Paint
This was close, but I think even more of a pano shot (cropping off the top)
would have brought it closer for me.
#38 - mycaptures - Future Yielder
Once again, great shot, great color. The main focus is on the green leaves,
so a little vague on theme for me, but still would have come close if not
for the DQ.
#39 - cj99si - Colors interpreted
Being a mom, this one just wasn't believable for me. That paint strip and
brush are WAY too pristine. Showing even a little sign of use would have
really helped for me.
#40 - puzzledpaul - Image building blocks
A few suggestions came immediately to mind with this one. The main one was to saturate those colors. They look pretty washed out. Also, you could have pulled a story into the theme with your props quite effectively if the title had been, "And the third little pig..." or something along those
lines.
#42 - The Curious Camel - The Journey...
This is a really cool shot too. Just a little too much gray to pull the
theme home for me.
#43 - Rustydiva - Free Spirit
Nice shot, but I'm not seeing either theme. I really don't consider cream
to be a "pastel".
#45 - barrotj - Reflected Pastel
The blues are too bright for this to fit the theme for me.
#46 - shatch - Search and Rescue
Another very cool shot. I'm not seeing the theme here either though.
#47 - webnana - grape tomatoes
Not a bad subject, but the flash is not complimentary and the white fence is distracting.
#48 - bc5964 - No title
Nice clean shot, good comp, just not real strong on theme for me.
#49 - MarcusG - Orange Bliss
Very nice image, just one more that missed the theme for me.
#51 - cheech4487 - love on the side
There is definitely a primary color here, but the harsh light and shadows
are just not very appealing.
#52 - Tentacion - Fierce
Definitely on theme. The flash isn't pleasing though and it seems soft,
except somewhere on the birds shoulder.
#53 - jeffreaux2 - The Honeymooners
An image that you should certainly be proud of. I was trying to figure out
what that color was though (greeny-yellowy-bluey-gray-brownish) and ended up with a color I called "blech" more than pastel.
#54 - sunita - Take your pick
Well done, I think I've just seen this too many times before. Just missed
my top ten.
#55 - sherstone - Bunny
Because I knew it was you, I found this hilarious. If I hadn't known it was
you, I probably would have found it more than creepy!
#56 - explorish - Follow the leader
I am assuming that the theme here was at "Primary" as in, "the first".
Great concept, comp isn't bad at all, just needed a little more sharpness
and I would have preferred to see the leader's determined face.
#58 - samsplace - In Service
The image is gone, but from what I remember, I didn't understand where the theme was here.
#59 - Awais Yaqub - You! "stop" right there
The color is definitely here, but the comp seems a little awkward to me.
#60 - eoren1 - Blue Gate
I actually really like this image and think your pp choices were excellent.
The blue was too strong to be pastel for me though, and too light to be
primary. I'm nit-picking, I know, but there it is.
#61 - 1pocket - A buoy's best friend
Your desaturation/selective coloring choices here just leave me questioning
"why?" other than to try and meet the theme. Emphasizing the bright green
bottom part of the buoys just doesn't really tell me a story. It is a very
cool subject to have handy though, and I think I'd keep this location in
mind for the future.
#62 - peterst6906 - The Wide Blue
This easily made my first pass, but then ended up just not as strong as some of the others for me.
#63 - pyry - And this should be green
Great concept, really. There were two things that bothered me though. I
think it would have worked much better if the person had been painting
something red, blue and/or yellow. Like maybe apples on the tree, or
something similar. The other thing, more importantly, was the hand holding
the paint pot. It took me a minute or so to figure out what it was and the
hand looks quite awkward. A paint palette would have likely just really
pulled this together for me.
#64 - richtersl - God's Canvas
Beautiful sky, but I think a much closer crop would have really pulled me
into it better. Just a smidgen of horizon and a little of the branch would
be neat to see.
#65 - Jet Jaguar - Junkyard Flower
Neat shot, good comp, just not really primary and too bright to be pastel.
#66 - hawkeye978 - Loosestrife in the Swamp
LOVE this picture. A wall hanger in my books. Just the same comment as
above.
#67 - AnaSimona - Frozen Tips
Gorgeous pale color here, I just kept wishing for a focal point to settle
on.
#68 - Travis - Blue Runner
Met the theme well, like the tilt and it's a good, panned shot. Just not as
strong as some of the others for me.
#69 - pyroPrints.com - Vibrant & Pale
Really great composition here and a very appealing image. The theme was
just a little too subtle for me.
#70 - kwalsh - Primarily Water
I've seen this shot several time before and this is very well done. I'm
thinking a close crop, excluding the glass (and maybe even on a tilt) would
have made this more intriguing.
#71 - overparduffer - "Childs play"
The color is sure there, but I think to make this image even more
interesting, I would suggest window light and perhaps a child's hand holding
them.
#72 - MikeK - Blueberry Pastel
I really like the color tones here, and I think that a landscape crop would
have worked really well to pull those in. Also adding a slight vignette
would help with distracting outer edges.
#73 - thegreenegg - A Mask's Reflection
Nice coloration here and a very interesting comp. I like it a lot, just not
as strong on theme for me as some of the others.
#74 - agilepawz - Frilly Lilly
Nice strong color, but a bit too centered, and needs a touch more DOF.
#75 - Michael Atkins - Leftovers from a failed Challenge attempt
Could have had some possibilities, but too much extraneous detail.
#76 - OhEddie - #76
Great night shot and some really nice color. Made my first pass, but just
didn't really pull me in beyond that.
#77 - furiousfart - Oldest Ice
Wow. I went back and forth with this one too. Great image, just not as
strong on theme as some of the others for me.
#78 - swintonphoto - Hand Me a Wheel
I have to tell you, this one was a little creepy for me. I have no idea
why, but it reminds me of those fortune teller machines at the seaside.
#79 - Nikolai - What Women Want...
Hmmm...what do women want? Red lips? White teeth? Perfect skin? True, I suppose (I'm hoping you're not implying anything smuttier here). Still, at
this extreme close-up, I am noticing the smear of her lipstick, and once
again, if I were male, I'd probably find this much more appealing.
#80 - TPBinKC - Red is the loneliest color
I think this had potential, but there are too many dark areas to really
punch the color through.
#81 - redleash - Canine Color Vision
I'm not really finding the white background, lighting or subjects very
appealing here. Now maybe if the toys were being held in the dog's paws in
a nice studio set up, then it could have pulled the story together more
completely.
#82 - tamplum - Back to the Basics: Color Wheel
The color is there, but just not presented in a very interesting fashion to
me. An abstract of this may have worked nicely.
#83 - chandi - Ephemeral
What a beautiful sight. It appears a bit oversaturated in other areas, however.
#84 - mtmillz - Caught...Red and Yellow Handed
I think you were really getting somewhere with this. I think it would have been even stronger though, if you'd cropped off the right side almost to the yellow hand, and perhaps even a little off the top.
Greensquared#25 - KurtPreston - Imagination
I loved what you started with here (the pastel colored alkaseltzer). But the bird then threw it off theme for me. The fizzer shot with a little color boost in it alone would have been stronger, I feel.
Thanks Emily! Perhaps this can be one of your "'crime scene" examples for compositon if or when you decide to pursue writing the Forensics thing

Still, at this extreme close-up, I am noticing the smear of her lipstick, and once again, if I were male, I'd probably find this much more appealing.
Heh ... I think this is a request for a beefcake shot in the Mega Challenge, Nikolai

Am I so straightforward? What she wants is NOT in the frame

I guess...
Note so self: put an ad for a nicely developed athletic adult male model asap...
I was afraid of that. Once again, a man mistakenly thinks he has any idea of exactly what women want...
Nonononono, I've been married for 20+ years, I know better, that's exactly why I left it OUT of the frame since I have no idea what it is I was only trying to show that she *wants* it, whatever it was at the moment...

I did think of using a palette, but I didn't have one available. Apples didn't cross my mind, that is a very good variation - I might just shoot one.
Considering that this is a challenge about color, the fact that this made my list says this shot did something right.
The action is the shot. This was a great idea for the challenge, and pulled off nicely.
The challenge #6 is confusing me, not that it matters really...:D but it says round #6 but is challenge #5... ???
Sorry, I di not want to start a new thread just for that...
Enlighten me... thanks and be well...

Oh really? Have you read the judging description for the Mega-Challenge?
there is schmoo and emily....correct?
now if your referring to the fact that there are three men and he should cater to them that is part of my point....he should not! its possible he could get more points with three male judges with a women model, than with a male model.......:giggle
arnt i sneeky
(not that Nik would fall for that tactic,
im just screwing around altogether here:D )
#39 - cj99si - Colors interpreted

My daughter (3) painted that months ago I just found it and used it as a backdrop for her new paint and brush..... I agree though after I posted it I wished I had put some paint on the brush.
#78 - swintonphoto - Hand Me a Wheel
I have to tell you, this one was a little creepy for me. I have no idea
why, but it reminds me of those fortune teller machines at the seaside.
Hahaha - I hadn't thought of that
I can see that. Well, the challenge certainly took me out of my typical comfort zone! Thanks for your feedback.
i like to think im more of the class clown....its possible im the only one that thinks im funny....
i thought that picture would give everyone a good laugh while we wait for everyones real entry:ivar
I thought it was hillarious... and then again... Photography is only a hobby for me!... I have met too many uptight pros lately!!! Which always has brought up the question to myself... "is it as much fun when you are on assigment and getting paid having to get that shot?" By the faces I have encountered lately I don't think so! Sombre...
I was going to enter this below, taken yesterday morning, as an "abstract"!!!... but... uptightness might have prevailled and feelings hurt... I just thought it would be funny... also.
I think there is an abstract challenge somewhere here... Tell you the truth all this looses me. Maybe I have to get a board. I think Spirit will start keeping track from now on...:D
#70 - kwalsh - Primarily Water
I've seen this shot several time before and this is very well done. I'm
thinking a close crop, excluding the glass (and maybe even on a tilt) would

Thanks so much for taking the time Emily! I do know how much effort it takes .
You're comments mirror pyry's and I think are spot on. I had cunning plans for illuminating a scene with "primary candles", i.e. three candles each lit and exposed separately and then filtered and added up (like a multiple exposure). I had some test shots that looked pretty neato but I just wasn't coming up with a composition using the technique that I thought was strong enough. So I fell back on this very "done before" shot at the last minute.
Again, thanks for everything you do for the forum and the contest!
im glad my sign was amusing! its right next to mcdonalds down on bluff I-15 interchange....go get a shot for yourself when your here in sunny saint george
thats a good entry for pauls challenge. though remember only 3 shots are allowed:D

More than happy to inspire! Great shot!

Thanks Emily! Perhaps this can be one of your "'crime scene" examples for compositon if or when you decide to pursue writing the Forensics thing

Nikolai, it sounds like you're stuttering....:poke

i mean haha....
you do have two female judges coming up.......work it work it!
Oh really? Have you read the judging description for the Mega-Challenge?
I did think of using a palette, but I didn't have one available. Apples didn't cross my mind, that is a very good variation - I might just shoot one.
Thanks Dave

there is schmoo and emily....correct?
now if your referring to the fact that there are three men and he should cater to them that is part of my point....he should not! its possible he could get more points with three male judges with a women model, than with a male model.......:giggle
arnt i sneeky
(not that Nik would fall for that tactic,
im just screwing around altogether here:D )
My daughter (3) painted that months ago I just found it and used it as a backdrop for her new paint and brush..... I agree though after I posted it I wished I had put some paint on the brush.
Hahaha - I hadn't thought of that
I can see that. Well, the challenge certainly took me out of my typical comfort zone! Thanks for your feedback.

sassy?
i like to think im more of the class clown....its possible im the only one that thinks im funny....
i thought that picture would give everyone a good laugh while we wait for everyones real entry:ivar
Oh goodness...does that mean I'm safe to peek at it as a non-entry???
ive never had the #1 slot before:ivar
go look just dont go past #1 if there is #2 which currently at present there is not.
Congrats! Now, you know as holding the first slot, your shot has to have extra WOW factor to make it, right?

Ken
thats a good entry for pauls challenge. though remember only 3 shots are allowed:D
