I need lens advice

I'm looking to get rid of my Nikkor 18-200, and i need to get something better. I do mostly people photography, and i have my nify-fifty, but i'd like to get either 17-55 f/2 or 80-200 f/2
I need for portraits and full body shots, i know i can't do full body with my 50, as i have to back up all the way out to the other side of the house :rolleyes
What would be best choice? I really like to get 17-55, but is it good for full body shots without backing up? And what about 80-200? What would be the best choice for what i need? :dunno

Hi Marina,

I moved your thread because the Camera forum is for discussing lenses and stuff. The Flea Market is for selling what you've got or buying what you don't have.

First, use your Nikkor 18-200mm and do some tests. Use the zoom and find out what focal length gives you the full-length view within the distance involved. It may be around the short end of the zoom, but at least you will know for sure.

If the 50mm prime lens is too long, almost for sure the 80-200mm will be "way' too long.

I do hope you mean the Nikkor 17-55mm, f/2.8G ED AF-S IF DX, because I'm not aware of an f2 version.

Ziggy, thanks for moving this to where it belongs. 18-200 is an OK lens, i'm actually looking to sell it, add some more money and buy 17-55, and yes, it's 2.8, just made a typo. I think this is just what i'll do.

The 17-55 would do you fine. Other good options and just as pricey would be the 28-70 2.8 or the 24-70 2.8. I've been using the 28-70 for people shots and I've been very happy with it.

I'd think a 17-55 would be excellent for a full body to a head shot.

I don't think there may be enough room to back up to do a full body shot with a 80-200mm though.

The 17-55 is a fabulous lens for wider portraits. You might want to add something like an 80-200, 70-200 or even a 105 Micro when you can afford it for compressing the background and getting smoother bokeh.
