Horicon Marsh
Horicon National Wildlife Refuge is located on the west branch of the Rock River in southeastern Wisconsin and encompasses the northern two-thirds of Horicon Marsh. Horicon Marsh is a shallow, peat-filled lakebed gouged out by the Wisconsin Glacier about 12,000 thousand years ago. The headwaters of the Rock River, Horicon Marsh is 14 miles long and three-to-five miles wide. Branches of the Rock River, small and intermittent streams, and groundwater springs provide the water resources for the marsh. At 32,000 acres in size, it is the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States.
Probably the best photo trip I have ever taken in terms of variety of subjects, vast accessible landscape, and with great weather and minimal insect activity.
Out of 2200 frames, nearly a thousand were keepers and 300 or so very good. I used the 1DMKIIN and the 400 DO IS/X1.4 for all of these handheld shots.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
Thanks, Mike.

Looks like an awesome place to shoot, Ric. And you really did it justice on this excellent selection of images that you've presented.
So how far is this paradise from your home?

Yeah that PP can be tedious. :cry It's better than do-do shots, though!
I was there in the spring . Many , many migratory birds come through there at that time ..
Did you go on the North/East end ?? THere are many large windmills in that area that are very beautiful ...
I hope to go there when all the ducks are there , mid-September time !!!

I will definitely be back this year...for migration.
Thanks very much, Stephen!
Thanks very much, Albert!
I hope my hats will still fit.
Thanks so much, Joel!
Nirvana is just over two hours away. Plus only 30 minutes from my wife's sister's place.
Thanks, Harv!
Coming from you, I consider it as high praise that is humbling.
Thanks, Walt.:D
Yep...I saw the windmills and even went right up to them.
To quote Arnold..."I'll be back!"

Thanks, Art! :D:D
Thanks!
All were from land hand held. There is a series of dikes they use to control the water level...a very critical element to the marsh eco-system.
Thanks, Dave.
