Too close for comfort... a visiting female Northern Cardinal

This gal did something I've only seen twice... she landed on one of my deck perches rather than on the ground to feed. She only stayed about a second and a half and I was delighted to get her in my sights and in focus. I got one shot off and she was gone. She was too close to get in the frame. All I've done here is crop some off the right side. Vertically, the shot is full frame. And of course... she was back lit.

40D, 500 f/4L + 1.4xTC

Fine catch and wonderful close-up! It would have been nice to get all of her in the frame, but it's still a great capture. I just love the crisp detail in her feathers.

Now that is some fine detail. Wow! Since you didn't get the whole body in frame, you may consider cropping a bit more to make it more of a portrait. I don't think you would lose much sharpness if any given the close distance from you to the cardinal.
