    Bulk-Loading.. !
Finally worked out some more improvements for a couple of our nice users who helped clear up some requirements for bulk loading..

In the next build, NitroDesk R3 will have a new BulkLoad button in the tool bar. Clicking that will open a dialog where you can select a folder in your computer. As soon as you choose the folder, the number of folders with files, total images and the total megabytes will be displayed.
There are three options for upload destination

An existing gallery/album: select an existing album to which all images will be uploaded

New Gallery/Album: Give a name for a new gallery to be created, into which the new images will be uploaded

Gallery Per Folder with pics: For every folder which has pictures in it (if you choose to include subfolders), a new gallery will be created with the title of the folder, and images in that folder will be added to the new gallery.

Additionally, you can choose resizing options for scaling down images before upload.
This goes to the two SmugMug users (you know who you are :-) ) who helped clear up the requirements.
Hopefully to be released tomorrow when i get to a place with high speed internet.

I tried it out last night (15-day trail) and I really like that you can move the galleries from one category to another and very fast. I selected 70 galleries and moved them into a new category and it took all of maybe 2 minutes. clap.gif

The program itself, though, really bogs down. It is a big time memory eater.

@cfrey6: Yes, it is true it does eat up lots of memory (at least temporarily). Since it is built on a platform where memory management is largely handled externally (.net), it tends to take as much memory as it needs (typically when showing you those image thumbnails). Normally, if you leave it be, you might find that the memory gets released gradually as garbage collection runs.Glad you found it useful for visualizing Smugmug in new ways, and thanks a lot for the encouraging words. :-)

Can I make a suggestion to add an option of "turn thumbnail preview off" and have it where we can view the file list instead?

Do you mean show the filename/image title and a few other key information about the image? I can see how that would work for galleries where image titles are meticulously set. Would that work for you?

Yeah. Exactly what you just said. If it makes things run a lot quicker, than most definitely. If I am arranging galleries around, for example, it is not so important for me to see the thumbnails.

    Hi -

Are you planning to support Snapfish anytime soon? I have the need to move alot of photos from Snapfish to Smugmug.

I see than Phanfare now offers a Snapfish importer.

    Thanks,

    Tom K.

Ah, but the gotcha with Phanfare's Snapfish importer is that it can only import web-sized versions (not suitable for printing).

The problem is that Snapfish, Shutterfly, and Kodak EasyShare do not allow their users to download originals. They hold your photographs hostage. That's why I've dubbed them "Photo Hostage Sites".

Actually ... looks like Shutterfly recently announced their "Open API". Now I can't imagine that they would make it so open that you could download their originals, and their Terms of Use have some disturbing things like:
    • Without the express written consent of Shutterfly, you can't use the Shutterfly Open API for any commercial purposes or derive any revenues from your implementation or use of the Shutterfly Open API.
    • You can't use the Shutterfly Open API to create a service or application to replicate the user experience of, or the services and features available at, www.shutterfly.com or websites owned and operated by Shutterfly.
    • You can't use the Shutterfly Open API to enable printing of Content through photo print services other than Shutterfly.
    • You may not copy, cache, store or retain any Content without the consent of the Shutterfly member. Any Content retained by or through your App may only be retained for a limited period of time to provide the services available through your App.

I've sent them a note asking if download of originals is even possible with the API. If not, the concerns about their Terms are moot.

I suppose they added API support to jump on the bandwagon (albeit extremely late) and see if some sucker out there might write a Wordpress plug-in/Facebook App that'll let you include photos from your Shutterfly uploads.

    Clearly they've overestimated the Web 2.0-savviness of their customer base, which is primarily scrapbookers, soccer moms, and other people > 45. :-}

NitroDesk is a fantastic piece of software, it has literally saved me hours and hours of work. I had thousands of photos I needed to organise but couldn't bear the thought until I started using NitroDesk.

I do have one suggestion though... Because I uploaded bulk photos I have some 'duds' which you can't really tell from the thumbnails. The thing is, when I double-click a thumbnail to get a bigger view there doesn't seem to be any way to drag the picture to another gallery, and there's no easy way to return to thumbnail view (that I can find) - even being able to press escape here would be handy. Also my subcategories don't all show up under the categories tree, only some of them - edit: but I can see the rest under the galleries tree.

Try Smugfoto in Facebook for displaying your SmugMug galleries.

One feature that I would find useful would be the ability for the program to grab both the title and the caption when transferring photos from Flickr to Smugmug. It should leave a blank line between the two to separate them. (And possibly have an option to disable that behavior if you wanted it to only grab the caption or the title) I sent that suggestion in through the 'Contact us' function in the program a while ago, but never heard back.

Anyway, I tried to purchase a copy of Nitrodesk today, and got the following error:
    eSellerate server reports:
Error: There are no valid SKUs assigned to this eSeller

    (error = 5236:7900)

Let me know when this is fixed, my trial has expired. Will the NITROSMUG code still work for $10 off?

    Andrew,

I don't know if this is how NitroDesk's site was always set up, but I find it a bit unnerving that there is NO mention of the NitroDesk software on their website as of today.

I just went to check out the page, and maybe grab a trial, but all I could find at www.nitrodesk.com was an Android app, nothing about a photo tool. On the "About" page, there is a mention of a photography app, but nothing else.

After trying to click the link in the first post, called "Read more...", I found the pages referring to Expression Media, but again, the site's menu system does not allow you to find this without a direct link. Based on the lack of posts here since October of '08, this could very well be an abandoned project.

Might be out of luck there, sorry.

    ~Nick

PS-At least you got the error before plunking the cash down!

Yeah, they've discontinued the product, it's no longer supported for new customers. They didn't get enough of a market for it. Too bad, I think it worked well for transferring photos from Flickr to Smugmug.
