Macro Beginner

Hello there, I just joined and already I am posting pics. :dunno
I was inspired by this thread to go out and do some stuff with the extension tubes.

1. flower leaf


2. bee


3. grasshopper

5. wild raspberry


I used a canon 40D with 50mm f/1.8 lens with about 50mm of el cheapo extension tubes. I did the dof preview button hack to get an aperture of f/8. Shutter speeds were from 160-250.

I tried the onboard flash but it was too hot, so gave it a miss.. I am only a beginner macro shooter so I am just floundering around trying things out.
Any comments and advice cheerfully accepted..

Cool shots Steve. I like the angles on the grasshopper and the wild raspberry shot too. Look forward to seeing more

Good start mate! Hang about in here and you'll get some awesome hints, tips and ideas. It blows my mind what these guys keep posting here in the macro forum!

Welcome to the forum and good first post - obviously having fun with your setup. WRT flash, people often add a DIY extension diffuser on the pop up (plastic milk bottle stuff) to soften it and you really need to use M mode on the camera and get used to using FEC to tweak the exposure.

I have your guide printed and am going to do the exercises as well. Thanks very much for all your excellent tutorials.

I will try the onboard flash diffuser trick. I have to get a strobe at some stage and learn how to use one..

I have just bought a second hand sigma 105 macro lens so I cant wait to use it.. woot!
