Cant afford the 600 f/4, I can afford a 300 f/2.8. Just curious, has anyone had much luck with this lens and a 2X?

Cheers

I don't do it often. It does work and in bright light, the combination is much lighter than the 600 f/4.

The 2.8 loses 2 stops with a 2x TC. So it becomes a f/5.6 at 600mm. I've bookmarked this post as I should have examples in a few days with a Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 and a 2xTC Sigma APO converter...hopefully all shot on a tripod during good daylight.

I use this same set-up , and the results are more than adequate ..
    And yes , hand-holdeable ..

And here is a stacked shot with the 1.7xTC AND the 2xTC , manually focused ..

These were all used on D300 . I mainly use the 1.7xTC , and have many photos with that combination as well , without much loss in IQ between the 2 ..
    It's an F4.8 with the 1.7xTC or F5.6 on the 2xTC .

Thanks. I appreciate the input. Looks like I'll be giving this combo a try.

If you can't afford the 600 mm reach, this is a good way to go. As long as you understand the limitations, you will have a very versatile combo.

I have a number of frames with the Canon 300 F2.8 IS L and the Canon 2x TC. It can be hand-held, unlike an EOS 600 f4 IS L or a Sigma 300- 800 f5.6. I do not recommend hand holding a 600mm lens ( 300+ 2xTC ) it does better on a good tripod. It will be better on a crop body camera, and better stopped down a stop or two, so it is really useful about f8 equivalent, which means shooting in sunlight, not deep shade.

This was captured hand held at the Yosemite shootout a few years ago with a 20D and a 300+2x TC. It does have a very nice bokeh.
