Very interesting image, very nicely captured, great use of selective focus and toning.
These kind of images kind of tug at my heart strings, regardless very nicely

What method do you use to convert to B&W?

I use Photoshop and an old plug-in called converttob&w. Then curves to add contrast and sharpening is important as well.
