I have just purchased a Vosonic portable storage VP5500 250GB. I use this if I am on a big shoot. I shoot RAW and am only able to get around 150 files on a 2GB card. When the card is full I insert it into the Vosonic storage and then I can clear my card and start again.
I use a 40D and as I have said I shoot RAW. The problem I have come up against is when I transfer the files from the Vosonic Storage onto the computer they come up as CR2 files and I am unable to preview them without first sending them into Photoshop. I find this most unhandy and time consuming.
I have tried changing from RAW to 'L' Jpeg and when I transfer these from the Vosonic Storage onto the computer they transfer perfectly and the type of file is: Graphics Interchange Format Image and I can open them in Preview without a problem.
When I shoot RAW with my 40D and transfer straight from camera to computer the files first appear on DPP Digital Photo Professional as CR2 files. From there I upload them into 'My Pictures' and have no problem previewing them as they then appear as Graphics Interchange Format Image. I never actually see a CR2 file icon.
Now with my 400D when I shoot RAW and transfer from camera to computer the files first appear in Zoom Browser Ex and they all appear as CR2 files. because of this I rarely use the 400D as it is such a time consuming exercise
What do I have to change in the Vosonic portable storage system and also in the Zoom Browser Ex to get things working with the 400D? Hope I have made myself clear.
Regards
Bob

It sounds to me like you are relying on the Canon software (and the configuratin defaults set when this software was installed) to handle your data transfers and manipulations. As it comes out of the box, the Canon software "senses" when you plug your camera into your computer, spins up the EOS Utility to aide you in downloading your photos and then spins up DPP so you can see them. All well and good if you don't mind doing things the "default" way.

Now, you introduce the Vosonic and things are no longer default. You probably can't get Canon software to recongize when you plug in your Vosonic so you need to get a little more familar with Windows (and the file/directory structure) and with DPP. Once you have that, you copy the files from your Vosonic to the folder of your choice. Now, open DPP, navigate to the folder with your photos. Once there, DPP will parse the data in that folder and preview all the image files it knows how to read. Done!

I suppose I need to ask: why are you shooting in RAW? It seems that it is very inconvenient for you, in which case JPG may be much easier.

You can transfer your images to your PC with your device, and then simply open DPP and view the files, no need to open in Photoshop. DPP doesnt require you to transfer the files from your 40D.

If your prefer to see these RAW images on Digital Photo Professional, rather than Photoshop, simply find one of your .cr2 images on your harddrive, right click it. Choose "Open with...", then select Digital Photo Professional from the list provided, and select the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

Also, If you use XP, you should download the Windows update that provides native viewing for your RAW files, as this will make things simpler, and allow Windows to show a thumbnail of the RAW file in Windows Explorer:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=d48e808e-b10d-4ce4-a141-5866fd4a3286&displaylang=en

If you use Vista, this is built in, but you may need to update it: read here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/codecs.aspx

Oh, finally...you will run into fewer problems if you 'erase' or format the CF card in your camera, rather than your device.

Yes Scott you are perfectly right with the procedure with transferring raw files from 40D to computer and it is excellent with their software. The problem I find is when I use the Vosonic to transfer, I have no idea what the CR2 file is until I send it to Photoshop(I will try DPP) and see if that is any better.I am gonna follow your instructions very closely as I am sure you know exactly what I am on about.

That should work, assuming you have a version of DPP that will read the CR2 files. These changed with the advent of the 40D.

Trick: Install a copy of DPP (or any other software) from the disk that came with any xxD camera then go to Canon, download the latest version of DPP and install that. You should be golden at that point. But, the clue is that you need to have installed on your computer at least one of the software items from the release disk in order to install/update the DPP that you download from Canon.

Sorry Scott, I have tried and failed . I have used the disc that came with my 40D and reinstalled the DPP but I just don't know where to go from there. You are obviously more advanced than I am, so I sincerely apologise for my ignorance. Although I do know that you fully understand my problem and there is an answer to it,

    Hi all,

I have an old VP6210 100G which I don't use much these days BUT the old girl served me well in the past, I find it more convenient to purchase CF cards, cheap these days, I tend to shoot a lot of RAW myself........

Anyway I am sure that Vosonic have flash upgrades to view CR2 files. Please go to their website and download the latest firmware. I hope this helps....

Thanks ever so much for replying I will certainly have a look and check on the latest updates. I am beginning to think I could have bought one hell of a lot of cards for what it cost and the trouble I am having with the CR2 files.

Canon400d: if you follow the first link I provided in my earlier post, download the Microsoft update, you will be able to see the .cr2 files from within Windows itself, and be able to determine which files are which. You will not need photoshop or DPP to see these files.
