I don't know how you can get that close to jays and cardinals. They take off on me as soon as I get within 100 yards. Great detail. Nice action with that swan too.

been thinking about a new lens . would love to get the 500-tc set up but my wallet says I'll probably get a 300 f4. & of course my wife just says "no"

Thanks a lot, Stephen. These birds were in an area where they have become fairly comfortable with people around. Then it just takes patience.

Thanks a lot, Dave. No doubt the 500/4 is a chunk of change. It's also pretty heavy to tote around a lot. At least it is for me. The 300/4 is great for carrying around and has great IQ. What I often use is my 300/2.8 with a 1.4xTC which is not too bad to carry and is plenty fast for most things. IQ is also great. Having said all that, you can't go wrong with the 300/4 if your wallet can handle it. Oh yeah, and the wife of course.

The 300 f/4 was my first prime...excellent...if only the 400 f/5.6 had IS...damn. That built in hood is terrific.

The first Cardinal makes me wonder how you stayed hidden. Great shot!

This is my 3rd 300/4 and I think I'll hang on to this one. I've had a few 400/5.6 as well but never kept them because of the lack of IS. The 300/2.8 is my lens of choice and one I always use for my in-flight shooting but the 300/4 is so much lighter to carry around.
