Feature Photo with sub-categories?

I have a link to a Portraits category on my main page. The Portraits category has direct links to galleries and a link to a sub-category. I want to have an image from the sub-category galleries be the feature photo on the main page Portraits link.
The sub-category displays first on the Portraits page, but the feature photo comes from the first gallery below that. Any way to get around that?

See my main page with 7 categories: http://kellyphoto.smugmug.com/ ?
See the "Portraits" category with a thumbnail of a dog?
See the "Portraits" page - http://kellyphoto.smugmug.com/Portraits ?
It has a sub-category on the top, where I want it, and Gallery links below.
The dog thumbnail on the main page "Portraits" category is coming from the dog gallery on the Portraits page.
I want it to come from the first gallery on the top of that page, which is a sub-category.
How can I do that?
Any special coding tricks to control the feature photo thumbnails?

I have exactly the same question.
I have "journal style" gallery as the first gallery under the subcategory, but I don't want any of its photos used as the thumbnail on the category page.

Photo that I want to be used as thumbnail photo: http://allen42.smugmug.com/gallery/8888279_oYtUH#589336629_gU67z

P.S. Or perhaps there's a better way of having my "get notified" page under a subcategory?
