This is a new one for me. I take motocross photo's and I have a photo of the son of an owner of a motorcycle dealership. He was kind enough to ask on what type of license was required, personal or commercial, how about that!

My commercial download for originals is $350. Which I just had put on there a year ago or so just on a whim. He want's to blow this up by a sign company that does vinyl wraps and wants to use it in his dealership. :clap

Are 8mp photo's enough to do this with?

How do you price something like this?

Is $350 way out of line?

Congratulations! 8mp should be fine. The sign company has dealt with smaller sizes, besides, just a few years ago 2.5 mp was the standard.

I don't know about the price, but I am sure someone with experience will help you out.

Given that you priced it at$350 it seems fair. Sell a limited right to the image. Maybe a 6 month exclusive for his advertising needs with an additional 12 month non-exclusive right to use. No reselling of the image to other parties, etc. Keep a provision for your business marketing use.

Now you got a sale and you have a billboard, congrats.

Work with the owner to find out what else he needs. Find out how often he does a billboard. Ask him what he is looking for and then try to deliver some examples every few weeks. Take the owner out to lunch every 3-6 months and show him some 8x10 prints of the better stuff you've done.

If you're not interested in growing the biz then sell the pic (with limited rights). Take a pic of the billboard once it is up and buy some photo gear with the money.

    Cheers!
    David

    Congrats!
Good for you! thumb.gif I think $350 is very reasonable for a billboard image, and that's definitely a commercial use, even if it is "kind of a family photo". DavidWeaver gave you some great advice. I'd just add, don't forget about your customer's print advertising needs.

He COULD just go with any stock photos, but he'd probably be willing to spend a bit more for shots of his son in action, if you put the idea into his head. Surveys have shown that advertising with this kind of shot labelled as "Joe Smith, Jr, of Joe Smith Motorsports", for example, are MUCH more effective, because folks like to deal with people who share their passion. You might even want to google up some numbers on that to wave under his nose. (marketing is SO much fun rolleyes1.gif)
