And the Stats mean what?

On the Control Panel Stats it has a number for Photos Viewed. I click to the more detailed view and for me it says hits are more than 3x as much. What are the calculations behind these numbers?
And a feature request - the graphs seem way too large if one has any more than a few galleries. Plus, I'd prefer to see the total presented at the top, not the bottom.
