say I had $1000 for a new camera body..compare and contrast the D200 vs D90.

It seems the d90 has most everything the d200 has (+more ) except for the metal body? Perhaps the d200 has more buttons for frequently used functions due to it size?

Any reason to get the d200?

The D200 has an older 10MP CCD sensor IIRC while the D90 has a newer 12.3 MP CMOS sensor from the D300. The new sensor should be less noisy and has a wider dynamic range as well looking at the D300's review at dpreview.

However, the Dxxx lines have always had a more robust build, faster fps, and more features. If you are doing photojouralistic work, events, sports the more responsive D200 may be a better fit.

If you do not need such responsiveness like landscape/cityscapes/vacations/informal portraits and such, the D90 may offer you more bang for the bucks and slightly better IQ.

The D90 will have a bigger screen and probably better battery life. It also has the newer sensor of the D300. I don't think you can go wrong with either camera. It comes down to personal preference.

    1. Live View- just push a button
    2. Video capability using your lens collection (i.e., that 2.8 lens you just love)
    3. 12 mp
    4. Same accessories as D80 (in case you have a D80)
    5. "Info" button pulls up all the exposure info. If, like me, you have always had trouble seeing the information displayed on that tiny top screen you'll love being able to see exposure info on that beautiful 3" LCD panel (very much like my much love KM Maxxum 7D).

YMMV. These are just some of the attractions for me, a D80 owner, who'd love to shoot some good quality vids with my 80-200, 2.8 and have several D80 accessories and who is far sighted which makes the info on the tiny mono panel very hard to see without my granny glasses. wings.gif

i have 2 D200 bodies in my collection; i see no reason to get the D200 over the D90 unless you're strapped for cash and am planning on buying a used D200 to save some $.
