Not seen any of the larger dance flies (Empis sp.) in my garden all year until the other day. Body length around 6mm. All flash except #2

how big was this one ?,still looks quite small, last one i shot was atleast half an inch.

Still fairly small - about 6mm body length. The smaller ones I've had in the garden all year are only about 2.5mm body length.

Love the first shot Brian, its quite a delicate looking flie,
with nice shaped wings to compliment it's body shape.

wouldn't surprise me in the least if you told me you trained them sit
That's quite a circular head it's got, the eyes meeting like that almost form a perfect ball.
