A few more sparrow shots. Getting these birds sharp was really a challenge. They're quick, and with the 1.4 on the 400, with the taped pins, AF was tough enough without having them not sit still for a second so I could focus and recompose. These shots (for me at least) were mostly really hard to get. I'm looking forward to getting a lens with a bit more legs so I'll finally be (somewhat) out of my misery.

I always say this, but it's so true I'll say it just one more time. I'm shooting the 400 with the 1.4. That gives me 560mm. Multiply that by the 1.6X of the 40D sensor and I end up with 896mm (if I did the math right). 896mm and I still don't have enough legs to get what I want. My partner goes out with the 600/4 and gets good AF with a 2X (nice). That's 1200 x the 1.3X of his body, so he's shooting 1560mm, and much of the time that isn't enough either.

I am envious of you guys who fill the frame with a 70-200. My 70-200 is probably my sharpest lens, and I never even bring it along..

Having sufficiently whined, I now submit for your perusal a few more humble efforts from last weekend.
