Going to Long Island May 17

So my aunt and uncle are being given a surprise 50th wedding anniversary party by their children. My mom is treating us to plane fare so we can attend, so of course I'm taking a mini vacation.

It's been a couple of years since I've been back "home." I do plan a trip to Tarrytown (to go to Horsefeathers to see if that outrageous, sinful and wicked New England Clam Chowder I remember tastes as good as I remember) and will go across to Nyack and hopefully to visit two friends in New Jersey on one day.

Last time I went to NY we did way too much, taking time to go to Falling Waters in Pennsylvania (worth it, by the way.) The album link is here: http://www.imagestation.com/album/index.html?id=4292459599

You may have to "join" to see the album though. Lots of photos of Falling Waters.

So this year I'm wondering what's neat to see on Long Island. I intend to go to Greenport, Port Jefferson, Fire Island (Sunken Forest), Jones Beach, Captree State Park -- what am I missing?

I like landscapes, ocean, beaches, flowers, neat old buildings, lighthouses, etc.

Any suggestions from local residents?

I know I should get up to the Bronx Zoo or the Brooklyn Botanical gardens, but I'm not sure I'm going to have time.

I think I'll pass on the World Trade Center, although a ferry ride to Staten Island might be neat, but I don't think we'll have time for that. Too much bother trying to find a way in or to park the car.

I might want to drive up to Mystic, stopping along the way for some lobster (hope it's in season).

I have to mapquest stuff to see how long these trips are going to take. I may be planning way too much again.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Dee,

Planting Fields Arboreteum is a great place to take pictures. The places you mentioned are all spread out so I don't know how long you are staying for or where your home base is but you could be headed for hours in the car.I'll be glad to help if ya give me more details.

Sort of in the center of Long Island.

We're not afraid to get in the car and drive a couple of hours...

Where are the Planting Fields, I've seen a few photos posted from members of STF if I remember....

Planting Fields is in Oyster Bay. From Ridge depending you aren't far from the vinyards of the North Fork which are all around Greenport. Oyster Bay is about 40 minutes west from where you will be. How long is your stay? that would help to know also.

Now that I think foo it. It's pretty early for the vinyards they probbaly are fruitless but the landscape is still really nice.

Arriving late Tuesday night the 17, leaving Wednesday the 25th, unless I find reasons to extend the trip, Laughing.gif

Since I was up the Hudson, especially on the east side. Haven't been to Tarrytown in decades!

I'm going to have to check my maps!

I have a tentative lunch date for Friday in New Jersey, so that pretty much kills that day. Saturday is the party... so I won't be able to do much that day. Hmmm, I may have to extend this trip a couple of days, Laughing.gif
