A new member of Dgrin sent me a PM that I thought we could discuss here.
A few things come to mind, and I'm sure others will jump in with points that I miss.I'm sending you this private note due to your moderator status and your obvious experience in this forum community.
I appreciate your welcome on my first post over this last weekend, and would like to ask your advice on how to get feedback from this community.
There seems to be a lot of traffic on this site and a lot of feedback and supportive comments. What would you recommend for a new comer, coming into the forum community to get that feedback? So far, my first two posts have been fairly small splashes.
Any advice for the new guy to become part of dgrin community? I'd like to grow as a photographer and like what I've seen of this community so far... so how do I get in?
Appreciate any advice or recommendations!
- You become a part of the community by posting. Share your best pics. Give helpful feedback to others. Ask specific questions about things you are having trouble with.
- Don't get upset if a post doesn't get a lot of attention. There are many possible reasons. Randomness is a major factor. I have seen fabulous pics from well-known masters receive few comments at times. Remember that at any given time, there are far more lurkers than members online. Lurker page views are included in the statistics, but they cannot post. Just keep posting.
- Take the time to get to know the different forums and what they have to offer. There's a wealth of information here.
- Take part in the Challenges. If you are new to photography, look at the Assignments sub-forun. Both will help you grow as a photographer and participating will put you in contact with many other people.
- Keep an eye out for shoot-outs in your area. Great way to meet other Dgrinners and learn from them in person.
- Be patient. This is probably the friendliest photography BB in the universe and we welcome people at all skill levels. But just like moving to a new city, it takes time to get to know people.
- And for the third time, keep posting.

* when you ask for an advice or an opinion (especially when soliciting C&C - critique and comments), keep your mind open: you may not hear what you would like to hear... (kinda inline with what RogersDA said)
