Two for C&C, Baseball Cooperstown

My first post of pics. Here are two photo's of my son at Cooperstown
week 12. This was the National Tournament of Champions Week. A
TOUGH week for kids from a "town team". There were a few national
travel teams which contained the best kids from different states, WOW,
they were awesome! Two things to note on these pics.

1. The fields ( 24 of them ) were all enclosed with plywood so there was
no access from behind homeplate. I found a gap of an inch or so to
the right of home plate where I took these. Of course only the photo
staff from the park had access to the field so from this angle, this was
the best I could get. The fan/parent area was located 20 feet beyond
1st or 3rd base sides. I was not able to get the autofocus to lock so
I went with manual. Light was also limited through the slot.

2. Just noticed a bug or bee flying by his glove hand in pic 1.

first shot is nice. Second one is too soft, IMO. It appears to be back-focused. Were you using continuous focus or single-shot? It appears the focus remained back at the rubber rather than following the player thru the delivery.

Still learning everytime I shoot.

I couldn't get auto-focus to work in any mode shooting through that
small slot so I was using manual focus. As he came forward, the focus
remained on the mound.

Here's another mistake. I focused on second base anticipating the steal.
It looks like the focus point is in the dirt toward the short stop side.
Is this because I had the cam in AI-Servo trying to focus on a fixed
object ( second base )? To setup this play, should I have used one-shot
to pre-focus?
