Basic photoshop question

Okay I have a really basic photoshop question for all you experienced pro's out there. I am working through the Lynda.com Photoshop CS3 Portrait Retouching Techniques training. In the first piece the instructor has you open a file and then create a new layer. On the new layer he has you use the spot healing brush tool to remove blemishes from the model. When I try to do this on the new layer nothing happens. I can use the tool on the original picture (background) just fine, but nothing happens when I try to apply to the new layer. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure you check "Sample All Layers". Otherwise you are healing a blank layer.

    No problem :D

You will see a similar option on many of the tools. The Spot Healing Brush is a check box, but on the Healing Brush it's a pull down (where you can select current layer, layer below, all layers). The Clone Stamp tool is also a pull down.

In general, take a look at the tool bar each time you select a new tool, as you will see the current settings for that tool.

Brad thanks a lot for taking the time to help me out. I have found that the training skips some of the setup stuff. I really appreciate the feedback though that really helped me.
