Firefox & Java upload problem

I've had trouble for the past couple weeks or so uploading using the latest version of Firefox and the Java method (simple upload?). Quite often, Firefox will crash. Usually when this happens, the photos that were already processed by SmugMug are at least saved. It's just that I may have to re-start the upload several times until I finally get all the photos. Never had this trouble before. Firefox is not crashing any other time. Anyone seen this or have an idea what the problem is? As a footnote, I have not yet changed my domain using the new protocol--- I just learned about this tonight. Could that be causing my problem? Will have to wait until tomorrow eve. Sorry for your uploading troubles. It shouldn't be related to your domain settings.
Could you give us some more details about what plugins / add-ons you have installed in your Firefox?
Does the same happen in Internet Explorer or does the upload work in it?
What version of java do you have? You can find this out by going to www.java.com and clicking on 'do I have java?'
Thanks,
Sebastian

What java version do you have?
With how many files does the problem occur?
After how many does it crash?
Does it consistently crash at the same file or is it always a different file?
What filenames / file sizes are the photos having?
That's a big load of extensions. Could you give it a try and create a new profile without any extensions and see if the problem still occurs? Here's how to do this.
Thanks,
Sebastian

It was generally on sets of over 25 photos/movies (photo files about 1.5megs each, videos varied, some large). I never ran it on the same set of files twice so I don't know if it would crash repeatedly on the same one. I'll have to make some test albums and run some uploads to find out.
Firefox extensions should not be interfering with the operation of a Java application, but I'll try a clean profile to be sure.
I just wanted to chime in that I'm experiencing the same issues. I haven't spent much time on it because it's generally late when I upload a batch of photos, but it seems to be failing (at least this time) while "checking your photo", after a photo has uploaded and is being checked on the server side. I'm using Vista, and the first time, Data Execution Prevention (a failsafe built into the OS) reported the issue. When I tried to re-try uploading the current batch (it succeeded in uploading 5 photos before 1st crash), it crashed immediately at the 1st photo uploaded at the "checking your photo".
Here's what Windows reports:

I know this probably doesn't help much yet. I'll try to get more info tomorrow if someone would like me to. Since it seems IE works, I'll try on Google Chrome with their new Java engine.

Here's a part of what DEP says:
"DEP can help protect your computer by monitoring your programs to make sure that they use system memory safely. If DEP notices a program on your computer using memory incorrectly, it closes the program and notifies you."
Obviously that's a bit generic for the OS, but perhaps the Java Smugmug uses for it's uploader has a memory leak or a stray pointer or something? Just a thought.

Crashed after about 50 photos, I'll try the same set again later to see if it sticks in the same place.
Hi Sebastian,
Unfortunately Google Chrome's Java implementation is supposedly built into their browser so you can't use it with Firefox as far as I know. I tried getting to the Simple uploader method via Chrome but it said it required a plugin still. Since I doubt Smugmug has developed one for Chrome yet (it's still beta), I don't think that'll work.
Again, IE worked like a charm with their ActiveX plugin (FF uses a java plugin, but IE doesn't). It even has 3 uploads, which was a new discovery for me As much as I don't use IE, I may just for this feature!

I'm guessing this is a global new version that just happen to support Chrome. So I see no reason on why it shouldn't be used in Firefox.

Awesome. Thanks for the tip. I was under the impression that Java would (should) update itself. Right clicking the Java icon on my taskbar doesn't have a 'check for updates' command either. Chrome seems to work now, I'll update after I try both FF and Chrome again to see if FF keeps crashing w/ the updated Java installed

Firefox and Chrome reject uploads but Safari handles them fine. My Firefox has uploaded without a qualm for a year and more and suddenly all I see is the Java cup of coffee with arrows above and below it, and no way to drag-&-drop photos onto it. In Chrome, dragging a handful of photos onto the Upload window produces an enlargement of one of them in the Review mode of the browser. Backing out of that puts me back in the gallery, out of the Upload mode.
I have a fresh Java and am using the Firefox 4b6 beta. That seems to have been the begining of my upload problems. I can upload using other SmugMug methods, but the drag-&-drop works best for me. For now, I'll continue using Safari and hope that the next release of Firefox gets rid of the problem.
We hope to get it out of beta and live this week
