Merritt Island Wildlife Shoot VI

Hi Y'all,

I'm beginning to get e-mails about the next MI VI wildlife shoot. From the initial response I've recieved it looks like we will be doing this craziness again.

The dates for the shoot will be 2/2/09 -2/10/09. I'm still waitin for some fool to step and volunteer to coordinate the west coast portion of the trip. I was waiting for some fool to volunteer to coordinate the Space Coast portion oif the shoot but no luck so I'll be handling that again.

For the uninitiated the MI wildlife shoots are a yearly event where photographers from the Nikoncafe and Dgrin gather at some of Florida's best wildlife spots for a week of photography. We usually start with one group on the West Coast and another group on the Space Coast. The West Coasters usually join the Space Coast folks on Tuesday. Some folks come down for a day or two and others stay for the whole week.

This is the thread where you can sign on for the shoot.

I will post updates when I get a group rate at one of the local motels
or when we schedule an event for the shoot like last year's visit to the Avian Center.

As usual I'll be hosting a welcome BBQ during the early part of the shoot and making reservations for the group at local eateries.

here's a few links to my galleries from earlier MI shoots.

As I opened up the Wildlife forum tonight to check out the photos I was thinking about MI and wondering about 2009. So glad to see it is a go! I had a great time last Feb. and will certainly try to get over there in 09.

Harry you sure are doing a lot of the "w" word these days. But we all appreciate it. I'll be there. Not sure what days I'll be there yet but how could I miss the Merritt Island shoot? Hope you and Linda are doing well.

I had hoped to make it this year Harry, as my wife is teaching at the University of Florida in Gainsville but it looks like I'm going to be kept busy with work through February. If that changes I will come, if not I will be in Florida maybe around May.

If you can't make it down in Feb, May is prime time at the rookeries in St. Augustine and Orlando.

    Harry,

Regrettfully, Nightingale and I will be in Montana for the first two weeks of February next year as I have a meeting I must attend ( not optional unfortunately). So we will miss seeing you all at Merritt 6. I plan to shoot a few frame of the eagle sin Burlington Iowa on the way out though.

I still hope we can get down for a few days in the rookery in St Augustine in late April early May if that is possible. Maybe a couple days in Vierra as well, what with gas prices half what they were a few months ago. We'll keep in touch.

Hope you can make it Glenn. If you're in Florida in May that's the peak time at the rookeries.

    Shuttle Launch 2/12
For those that are traveling from out of the area, there is a launch (Discovery to the ISS) now scheduled for Feb. 12 at 7:30 AM.

If you think about extending your stay remember NASA does change their schedule. ne_nau.gif

MINWR does close the "day of" a launch. I would guess it may close 2/11 and some of 2/12.

The refuge closes three days before launch when the countdown begins; likely the 9th through launch though I would not rule out the eighth as well.

Not a problem. We had a shuttle launch during the last shoot. I'll just schedule a day at the raptor center for one of the days the MINWR refuge is closed. We still have the Viera Wetlands, the Blue Heron Wetlands, the Orlando Wetlands, Pelican Island, Gatorland in Orlando, and a fewwother alternative shooting sites.

I had thought it was a three day closing but some folks told me it was only one day (what do I knowne_nau.gif ).

So I called MINWR HQ this afternoon and they "thought" the closing would be Tuesday afternoon (2/10) through Thursday morning (2/12).

Harry, let me know what would be a good lead time and I will call them again.

Its too far away to think about just yet. I've seen to many shuttle launches get rescheduled or scrubbed to worry about it just yet. We'll look at the launch schedule again in mid to late January.

My thoughts too. My original intent was if anyone was flying in from out of
state they might want to stay a day or two in hopes of seeing the launch if it interested them.

If I had booked a flight from NY to return on Wed. Feb. 11th and then found out about the thursday launch I would have been wondering how much the airlines would charge me to change my plans :D

Last year the West Coasters shoot in the Ft DeSoto area. No one has volunteered yet to coordinate the West Coast portion of the trip but Mike McCarthy has offered to take folks out on his boat for some osprey photo ops. Mike lives in then Venice area.
