Night Photography Tips?

I'm about to finally learn how to shoot at night... does anyone have any good tips, sites, or helpful advice?

I'm shooting on my Canon 40D, my cheap-ish Manfrotto tripod, with a few lenses but primarily my nifty-fifty and my f4-5.6 17-85mm IS USM. I've tried a few times with limited success, I'll include a photo:

One nice thing about shooting at night, is that you can use almost any P&S that you can shoot in Manual and can mount on a tripod.. For action shots at night, it is High ISO ( 800+) and fast glass all the way, which means a modern DSLR, like your 40D.
