Well, I am still working on this one for my dh. His business is D....B.....Financial Services, and I thought this looked like a good , strong monogram type logo. I now realize I need to clean it up (ALOT!)

I'm a landscape/nature photographer. My initials (MM) form the tree and mountains. I wanted a wildlife graphic and I picked the bear because I live in California (state flag). The film strip, well that should be obvious. I wanted the cross because I am a Christian and I wanted to 'represent'. :D

I would really love to get your feedback
I am in the process of redesigning my site and branding, and would really appreciate some honest feedback on my potential new logo.

What I am trying to do is gracefully move away from Carey Photography because another photography has the careyphotography.com url and we have had some problems with customers ending up at the wrong place (yes, I do the right thing and direct them to the correct photographer). Although he hasn't said anything I think it's bugging him because he's recently started using Carey Photo in his seo (it's good that the competition is feeling the heat, right? mwink.gif). I am going to start gracefully moving toward CareyPhoto (with an appropriate tag line), which is my url, without losing the recognition I have already built up under Carey Photography. Plus, the Freestyle Script that I threw up on my site originally is more suited to a wedding or baby photographer than someone who spends a lot of her time photographing rock-crawling. rolleyes1.gif

I want something simple and crisp (no images) but distinctive, and this is the idea I've been playing around with. After trying it out with close to 100 different fonts, this is the one that is most visually appealing to me, but I'd really like to get other people's reactions to it because I want to do it right this time and I am literally tearing my hair out over font choice.

This is the one that is ideal for my banner so I don't have to redesign my entire home page (shown on a black background because my website has a dark background):

    396615000_cKxGo-M-1.jpg

And an alternate version for when linear isn't the best option:

    396614997_MPohn-M.jpg

So, does this work? Is it at least going in the right direction? Right idea but wrong font? Scrap the entire idea and start all over again from the beginning?

    rolleyes1.gif

    TIA for providing any feedback.

    Lori,
I like the font you're using here. It's simple and easy to read, yet has an elegance and style about it. Excellent choice. The problem I'm seeing is that I can't read Photography as one word. Because of the difference in color AND size, it's reading as 2 words, which in some cases isn't bad, but this one is somewhat awkward since "graphy" isn't pronounced the same in both cases.
I wouldn't start all over again if I were you, but play with the arrangement a little... maybe if "Photo" and "Graphy" were the same size it would read better... maybe if they were the same size but still different colors...
You might also think about adding ".com" in there if you can find a subtle way to do it. Unless you had mentioned that your URL is CareyPhoto, I wouldn't have known to check it. I'm sure you're planning of putting it clearly on your business card, but if you can work it into the logo, all the better and leaves more room on your card for your contact info without having to "cram" everything on there.
Hope this helps, just some quick ideas while I'm supposed to be working!! :D

That is great feedback Chris, thank you so much. Big sigh of relief that you approve of the font, especially noting your sig line :D. You gave me some great ideas to think about and play with. I was a bit ambitious trying to blend Lori Carey - Carey Photo - Carey Photography while still keeping each separate, and I liked the almost-symmetry of big font/little font (having a first name with two straight lines doesn't help mwink.gif).....but sounds like I may need to rethink that and give it a try based on color alone.

Thank you, I'm going to go play around with it some more!

In fact, I've been looking through our font set and can't seem to find the one you're using... or even one that's similar enough for me to be happy with... mind sharing? :D
Also, don't completely ignore the size change... just try a couple where you're only changing one element or the other... size or color... it may turn out that the confussion in reading "Photography" is an effect of changing both...

I don't mind sharing at all Chris. The font is Blake, and it's actually a free font (part of my concern in using it) easily available on the web.

Hiking Mike your logo has always been one my favorites! thumb.gif

Played around with another twenty or so versions taking to heart Chris' suggestions and here's what I've come up with:

    398664537_ZyQ6v-M.jpg

I forgot to mention that this font does not have lowercase letters Chris, just caps and small caps, which can be somewhat limiting. I may try to get creative in transforming the "o" and "m" in .com (or putting each letter on a separate layer) so there is a touch more space between them.

When you look at it just right, the OTO in photo looks like a face peering out at you. rolleyes1.gif

    Better?

OK I'll play, I would like to polish it a bit more, and in small reproductions the font is really not big enough. So I shot myself in a mirror backlit on a white background, flipped it and placed in an set of circles resembling the front element of a nikkor lens. The idea came when I was looking at a lens and happened upon my reflection in it. Anyway here you go.

Oh yeah one nice bonus, the circle format fits perfectly on a dvd label.

Both look good, Lori!! And please take any suggestions I make with a grain of salt... we're so busy at work lately that my creativity meter is running pretty low... rolleyes1.gif

That said, I think I liked the first version better... the symmetry of the whole logo really worked... I found the font (thanks for sharing) then had a ISP connection issue as soon as I tried downloading it, so I couldn't play too much with it, but I played with an idea real quick while I waited for dinner to cook last night... I'll send it to you in a PM...

How do you make a logo in Photoshop??
I have been thinking for what seem like forever that I need to get myself a simple Logo design. Are there any tutorials available of how to do this in Photoshop? I'm sllking for something simple that I would like to try on my own first and if it does not work out, then I'll have to looking into a professional designer.

I've been thinking about your re-branding. I assume your old logo has a different look/fonts, so why not just drop the 'graphy' and just use 'CAREYPHOTO'? I just think the extra text (graphy) works.

    Michael,

I did a couple quick google searches, and there's a wealth of information out there... I would start here:
    http://justcreativedesign.com/2008/01/08/how-to-design-a-logo/

It has less to do with Photoshop and more to do with a logo in general and may be a good starting point.

If you've got an idea already in mind, go ahead and start "playing" in Photoshop. Just remember to start BIG. 300dpi and give yourself an 8"x10" image so you've got plenty of room to rearrange the words, images or shapes you're experimenting with.

If you're stuck for ideas, try a google search for sample logos. There are a number of quality sites available with the sole purpose of showing off well done logos. And you'll probably find a number of ideas you can at least base your own thinking off of.

Time for my own personal tastes... try to lean towards a clean, almost simplistic logo. You want it to be easily identifiable at a glance. Also it will help when you shrink it down to place on a business card. A more complicated logo can easily become unreadable at smaller sizes.

Once you've got an over all idea or a thought on what you want the end product to look like, take a look through http://psdtuts.com/ There are a bunch of great tutorials there to help you give a little more "pop" to your logo. I also enjoy just playing with the different layer styles, which can sometimes get you right where you want to be with it.

    Hope that helps!!thumb.gif
