Can I mount a flash light mount onto normal tripod?

I was looking to get a cheap light flash stand and umbrella to play with but was wondering if I can mount it onto my tripod instead of a dedicated light stand???
Seems like tripod is 1/4X20 (which I assume means 1/4"??)
and light stands are 5/8"
So does this mean it won't work? Could I get an adapter or something
Thanks!

Well that looks nice compared to the one I'm looking at - but really i'm thinking of something really cheap just to play with... was looking at this:
http://cgi.ebay.ch/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=120303562090
What do you think - will it work for a first time beginner who wants to play around?
Note that anything here in Switzerland is going to be 3X the cost of anything on BH :cry Just the way it is....
Thanks, Jason

The one you linked to looks fine except for attaching to a tripod. If you can find a threaded rod connector you could make a "stud" adapter pretty easily to mount the linked bracket to a tripod. Alternately, you might be able to get a machine shop to make an adapter stud out of brass.
I'm referring to these:

They have threads all the way through and connect 2 lengths of threaded rod. Hardware stores have them. You would want the 1/4" threads of course.

Thanks Ziggy - so basically I need to get a adapter stud which is 5/8" one end and 1/4" the other
No problems I think my neighbour could fabricate that at his business
Thanks again,
Jase

Pretty much like that. If you can get hold of an actual tripod stand your neighbor could take some measurements and produce exactly the right thing.

Canon EOS flash units come with a little plastic mount ( in the vinyl case that comes with the flash ) that mounts the hot shoe foot of the EOS speedlite, and has a 1/4 x 20 female thread socket on the underside that screws into the 1/4 x 20 threaded stud on a tripod.
I use my old EOS 550ex this way all the time. Won't hold an umbrella post, but for fill out of doors an umbrella is not usually needed either.
