Macro Mode of a P&S? Is it of any use?

On one of the official visits I could only take my old P&S with me.

On one morning I ventured out to shoot some pictures in the city. When I found some blooms, I suddenly thought of using the macro mode of the cam which was never tried by me erlier.

The following are the results. It is for you to judge whether the macro mode was of use.

Has the P&S not delivered results not inferior to any specialised macro lens?

Very nice series....particularly from a P&S. Thanks for sharing.

I always wanted to lie naked on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace. Cracker Barrel didn't take kindly to it.

    Very nice shots!

I think where things get confusing is the definition of Macro. While your P&S can indeed shoot very close, can it do true 1:1 or greater?

A true Macro lens can get actual life size (A full frame camera (35mm) could capture an object 35mm across exactly. Or closer depending on the lens.

I believe the macro mode on a P&S just allows the lens to focus closer. When it is not in macro mode it locks out that close focusing to prevent the lens from hunting for focus that close.

I could be wrong on this so someone please correct me if this is the case.

My favorite is the first one. Very well done.

Thanks Tom. P&S can come handy for flower shots (....I should not say macro) also

    You are very correct Rhuarc.

I agree that a P&S can never be able to match a true macro lens. But the capability of P&S to close can be exploited to get some decent shots in circumstances when the DSLR with a macro lens cannot be used or carried
