Not a completely bad capture, but I'm thinking the air wasn't exactly calm (so called bad seeing), was it?

How many shots did you take to choose the best one out of?

I'm going to have to get out the old telescope and put the camera mount on it. This and the ones of M31 are very good. I want to check out what software is available for processing. I have an old digital camera that attaches to the eye piece holder on the tele but I could never get it to focus clear enough so its been in a box for 3 or 4 years.
Here in Dallas there is a LOT of light polution so I'll have to find a place in the country to work with this.

100-400 is a fairly slow lens (4.0-5.6), so when you add TC and hence lose one more stop xxD (40D in my case) cannot AF it anymore (1D series still can).
The trick is to put a tiny patch of insulator (scotch tape is used most often) on the three pins of the TC. This way camera doesn't "know" about TC and allows AF to work. I actually set the lens on MF (otherwise it hunts alot and can grind the motor down in no time), but at least I get focus confirmation.

My very brief DIY is here, or you can search for extra details here at dgrin or at dpreview.

This was my first time using LiveView for that. I found it extremely helpful, much better that "eye" based. deal.gif

Very, very nice, Nikolai!! The thing that strikes me is 1/160s on a monopod. Gotta love that IS, right? deal.gif

And thanks for reminding me that I really need to try out LiveView. Although, I may have to stack both of my TC1.4X's, just so mine's bigger. :D

    Cheers,

    Joel,
    thanks! thumb.gif
Yeah, IS is a blessing, so is LV.
As to your idea: two TCs would lose two stops, not just one. You'll be in 1/80s range at almost 800mm eek7.gif , no IS would save you, unless you crank ISO up to, say, 400..800...
