Search Photos by Keyword

Hi,
I'm trying to create a simple photo search using a keyword (similar to the search available on the SmugMug website). I looked all over the API and couldn't find a way of doing this. I then went on to feeds, and managed to partially accomplish this using a feed. My problem is that the feed doesn't tell me the total results count of that search (e.g: search for flower returned 1,200,000 results). Is there a way to get the total results? Is there a better way to perform this search than with a feed?
