New Lens, New Ducks

The new lens is actually a used one I bought, a 300 f2.8.... with IS. Which came in handy since it was a drizzly, cloudy day and I headed for the pond at around 6:30pm. In other words, we're not talking bathed in golden light, here. More like drenched in gloom. So the lens didn't have a chance to show how sharp it is - none of the shots are all that sharp, because of the slow shutter speeds.

But the ducks were out. And as it turns out, momma duck has a brand new gaggle of baby ducks.

Low light, ISO 1000, IS turned on, shutter speeds around 1/100, handheld, blah blah blah.

nod.gif Even in the super low light, the autofocus was still fast. I was surprised. I had intended to bring the extender, probably a good thing I forgot, given how dark it became. Lucky for me, a family showed up with bread, and that drew the duckies closer. Bugger's heavy, that's for sure. And it feels weird not having a lens cap.

There must be an unwritten law that requires... All photog equipment shall go thru a "breaking-in" period with either ducks or squirrels as the subject. I know I did with my cam!eek7.gif

Enjoyed the perspective of the first ducky image. Different is good.thumb.gif

You have a lens cap. It's built into the hood :D I tried stacking extenders
with my 500 yesterday (on a tripod). Had the sun been out, all would have
been good thumb.gif Auto focus was a bit slow but otherwise, OK.

You'll get over the weight. It's still lighter than 8lbs...

The baby ducks are cute, Sid. They look like tennis balls.
