Facebook Share feature doesn't show thumbnail

Hi,

I haven't been able to share a photo from any of my galleries into my Facebook profile as a Posted Item which appears on my Wall.

Usually, if I want to share a photo or a news article from anywhere on the web on my Wall in Facebook, I just click on the Facebook Share bookmarklet which then pops up and has a little blurb summary of the text/website as well as a thumbnail for the photo. Often, if there is more than one photo on that page, it will actually give you a selection of thumbnails to choose from. I have tried to do this from both the gallery level and the individual photo level and there are still no thumbnails that show up.

I'd like to feature and share photos as a posted item on Facebook on top of having the SmugFoto app in one of the profile boxes. The SmugFoto app works nicely, although being relegated to the side of your profile, it has nowhere near as much prominence and impact as a Posted Item with a thumbnail.

If anyone knows how to get around this, that would be great. Thanks!

Nelson

    Thanks Andy:)

Actually, ANY of my photos - I've tried it and have no success. Are you able to share yours with thumbnails into your Facebook profile?

Hmmm...although none of my other photos work either and I don't have external links turned off in those galleries. Here is a photo as an example:

    Thanks Andy,

Yes, that works, although not in the way that I was hoping. By using the specific link for the photo, there is a thumbnail, but when the link is clicked, the photo is just showed in isolation, out of context of the actual gallery it is in within my smugmug website. If I use the gallery link, there is no thumbnail. Ideally, what I was hoping for was a way to post a photo and when a friend clicks on the photo, it goes to that photo WITHIN the gallery on my website so that they can continue to browse other photos as well. Is this possible?

    Thanks:)

It works within this dgrin forum, but when I use the Facebook Share Bookmarklet, there is still no thumbnail unfortunately.

Have you been able to post your photos as an item on your Facebook profile with a thumbnail?

I think Facebook does not like the "#" mark in the IMG tag.

If that's the case, is there a way to get around this?

Andy, does it look to you that this doesn't seem to be possible then?

    Thanks.

I think what shrekie is talking about here is if you're on FaceBook, and you 'Add A Link' for sharing, it automatically goes and pulls a thumbnail in from the site. Is that right? It most likely does not work on SmugMug the way it is supposed to. In order to make that work FaceBook requires that we add some extra data to the head of all our documents to make this work. I've added it in as a feature request, and assuming no one is opposed to it, it should be fairly easy to implement. Also, be sure to let me know if I am completely wrong.

Yes, you're right. It still doesn't work for me at the moment, so if you could get it implemented and it's fairly easy, that would be great and much appreciated!

Neither the Facebook nor the Smugmug method of linking a gallery to my Facebook page are working for me.

    Facebook method:
    1) Open gallery in Smugmug
    2) Click on 'Share on Facebook' button provided by Facebook.
    3) Window opens ready to install the link but none of the 25 icons available to represent my gallery have anything to do with my gallery. Facebook seems to be gathering these icons from other areas of my Smugmug account.
    4) This link works but it's silly to place it with an irrelevant icon.

    Smugmug Method:
    1) Share > Be Social
    2) Click Facebook icon & Connect
    3) Since I'm already logged on to Facebook on another tab, it went straight to asking me to write a message to accompany the link.
    4) I write a message and click on 'Share on Facebook' on the same window.
    5) Smugmug message says my link has been posted but nothing ever appears on my Facebook page.

Actually, with the Smugmig method, it works better for me in that I can get the link and the icon to the photo that I want to appear on my Facebook Wall. However, when I click on the link or the icon in Facebook, it takes me to the first image of the gallery rather than the actual image I was sharing.

I would settle for that in a heartbeat. The Smugmug method will not work at all for me.

    Scotticus,

I've come across this issue as well, i.e. the "Add a Link" feature on Facebook does not pull a thumbnail representing the gallery link on my wall. Do you know if this feature is planned for a future update?

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Scotticus,

I found this on Facebook's site under Help Center -> Links -> "I don't have a preview for my link.". Hope this helps... - Brian

I tried using the advice at this URL with no success. After adding the three lines they suggested, Facebook forever searched for a thumbnail to add to my link.

If anyone has any success with this, please post what you did. I'm very anxious to get this working.

Those three lines would go in the HEAD section of the site-wide-customization. Where did you put them?

I contacted SmugMug and one of their support heroes, Steph Theune, identified the problem I was having. If your photos are right-click protected or your gallery has external linking disabled, Facebook will not be able to generate thumbnails. In my case, my gallery photos were right-click protected. After turning that off, FB was properly able to scan the photos to generate thumbnails. After posting the link on FB, I turned right-click protection back on.

A big thanks to Steph! Hope this helps.
