The shot shows a hydrogen explosion, used as a chemistry demonstration.
The balloon is filled with hydrogen gas, and ignited with a lighted match.
The camera used was a Leica C-1, a brilliant camera when it was working.
I had three of them, and they all had trouble. Leica eventually gave me my money back. Very honorable I thought.
