DSLR green modes rant

OK, I'm officially pissed off. :deal
I just realized than my brand spanking new 50D has not 3 (like 40D) but only 2 custom sets. :huh
I started to look what gave and realized the new CA mode (which is a mix between Full Auto/Green and P, IIRC) took the slot. I started to wonder why they couldn't drop something else only to realize that exactly 50% of the knob is filled with "scenic" modes - none which I ever use!!! :deal
I wonder what would it take to persuade Canon to drop those - pure P&S-ish, IMHO - features in favor of more pro-like stuff? It's like having a Blueray entertainment system on F1 car.. :scratch
The infamous DirectPrint button experience shows that they may listen if the same idea is brought to them year after year...
Argh...

The 5D never had those Silly Modes in the first place, but I'd wager that the crop sensor series aren't going to lose them any time soon - there being buyers at the price range who think the camera should know what it's doing instead of the photographer. Still, I would also very much like to see them lobbed off, put a coupon in the package for some classes or something.

I remember giving the sport mode a go some years back on my ye olde 300D. Reason was that servo focusing wasn't directly available any other way. That ended badly, because the camera immediately at the first half press decided to go for the flash option. And I had my paws on the pop-up bit. Cue a number five...
    Creativity's hard.

    I hear you man!

Check out the settings... you can choose from a blurred or sharp background (aka... aperture for the rest of us?). headscratch.gif

This was my problem when I had my hands on the 50D a few ways ago. It seemed like they were trying to market the camera to the rebel-newbie crowd.

    And the slider menu???? ne_nau.gif

    just seemed odd.

I almost think that Canon did it purposely to bump us up a tier. Blurred background mode is almost as bad as those cameras with a "food mode".

Aside from this Nik, would you recommend this camera? I am using the XSi, and am thinking to add the 50d to my gear.

I can't seriously say anything about it since I didn't take a single shot yet.
The only thing that kinda indicates my recommendation is that I actually replaced one of my 40D bodies with it. The future will show whether I was right or not. Thus far I liked my upgrade path 20D -> 30D -> 40D (-> 50D), but that's me...mwink.gif

Andy has yet to give his endorsement it seems?
