Thanks for the analysis, Dwayne. Yeah, I think the auto resizing done by SmugMug causes both problems. There's no sharpening halos or banding on the 1600px version that I sharpened before uploading to SmugMug. I've noticed this on other images. I've yet to discover the optimum image size for uploading to SmugMug to avoid these little problems. Perhaps a straight 800px upload would be the best for images that will be linked with the "Large" option. Maybe someone else can help with this question.
