Well, we left Vegas at 5:30 am and stopped for breakfast and a short shooting detour at Cedar Breaks (photos later!). Cedar Breaks is 10,350ft above sea level and it helped me remember how much I dislike altitude.:killingme But it was very neat to see and there was snow on the ground too.
We reached Moab around 4:30 and found Adam who told us that we were meeting at The Windows and Turret Arch at 5pm to shoot sunset. We got there in plenty of time and I turned away at one point and someone striked a Captian Morgan pose...who could that be?
After the sun was all gone we hiked down to Double Arch for star trails and some painting with light.
Here's a 30 second exposure--
This one is 5minutes and 19 seconds as you can see you can just start to see the star trails.
And this is a 4 minute exposure where we had Aaron go up into the arch with a huge light (I think it's like a million candle watt or something) and "paint" the arch for us.

And the match that started it:
Here are some from Thursday...
The iconic Arches shot... (shot during 50+ MPH winds)
Reaching for new heights (along the La Sal Mountain Loop with crazy driver Andy!)
All things must die (okay I'm too tired to think of a better title, what day is it, anyway?)
My destiny is to become the best Aspen ever (see above)

Just after sunrise Thursday morning I played with HDR a little bit.
I've got some more editting to do to each, I just merged the three exposures but I have touch ups and some contrasty type things that need to be fixed.

And since my back was hurting I planned on going into town to see a doctor, but we decided to track down False Kiva which is down an unlabeled trail in the Canyonlands. The trail is marked with cairns and is over an awesome rock/dirt trail.
And of course we had to take a Smuggy shot!
Skippy headed back down a portion of the trail.

Cool shot! I found me!
Afternoon at the Windows.
View of the area south of the Windows.
View of the North Window from the Turret Arch.
Finally, the Balance Rock with the snow capped La Sal Mts in the distance.
It's been an eventful week. There'll be more coming I'm sure.

Those came out great Dave! I especially like the Mesa Arch shot and the Dead Horse sunrise shot.
Just an FYI. I tried the link to your davevphotography.com, and it is no longer working. Your davev.smugmug.com worked fine. There were some changes made that could be causing this. Check:

Skippy leads the way back to our stuff so that we can start the trek back to the car.
Oops, I got in the way of Kendall and April's shot...
We had to leave early on Sunday so that we could hit Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend before returning to Las Vegas.
The entrance to Lower Antelope -
The colors and shapes in the canyon are awesome!
I did a fun 8 second exposure to make a ghost image of myself.
And later I got a ghost shot of Skippy and Beach Bill.

Of course I could hardly contain my enthusiasm, and she just didn't get it.
Without them, shots like davev's wouldn't have been possible. I just wish we had gotten some of the snow they had mentioned.

I'm always blown away by the quality of work done at the Shootouts, and the early posts above have me feeling as sheepish as ever -- still, here are some shots I wasn't too embarassed to share.
This was Sunday morning on the way out -- just outside of Zion NP.
Cathedral Valley in Capitol Reef (my favorite park in Utah)
Twisted Cedar Near the Windows in Arches
"Battery-Powered" Aspen Trees in the Lasal Mountains
You might not be able to tell from the pix, but we had a BLAST, pushed our creativity, honed our skills, and enjoyed the time immensely! Thanks to Andy, Mark, Dave and all the attendees for making this the best shootout ever!
Chris
Thanks -- #1 is all luck. I was out for a morning walk and saw this guy with a tripod pointing the opposite direction I was walking. I turned around, and started shooting. I didn't have the lens I wanted, and my tripod was nowhere near, but sometimes nature compensates Like I said, I was lucky. Good luck finding your own great light this fall!
These ghost pictures are way cool! Nicely done.
Thanks! They were fun to do too! But, I think some people thought I was crazy as I did a couple versions of my own. Maybe they thought the altitude was getting to me....
Your pictures are fantastic, I remember the Zion shot from one of the critiques, soooo cool!
I hope more people keep posting pre, during, and post shoot pictures here.

I'm at Panera Bread enjoying a semi-healthy meal that's much less expensive than one I'd find on the Strip and I'm also enjoying free wi-fi instead of the $13 a day crap the hotel wants me to pay. Those of you who know me know I only spend $$ on horses, automobiles, and cameras.
On BeachBill's suggestion I ventured up to the ghost town of Rhyolite yesterday. It was my first visit to a ghost town and makes me want to visit Bodie even more!
Your first stop in Rhyolite is the Kelly bottle house. It's a house made of...bottles! At one time there were 53 mines and as many saloons in Rhyolite. Most of the bottles used to make the three bedroom house are from Adolphus Busch Glass Manufactoring...now Budweiser!
Next up is the Rhyolite Mercantile which is privately owned and offered for sale. Who wouldn't want to own this charming fixer upper?
The Cook Bank Building is quite famous and you may recognize it from the 2005 movie starring Ewan McGregor, The Island. It's roped off with barbed wire now as it's quite dangerous with big chunks of brick/stone ready to fall at any moment.
