Colorado Fall Gold
Two days at the last of the fall color.
I was not able to go up and view the peak of the Aspen's fall color change in late September. I did get up last weekend. The weather was forecast to be overcast with rain and snow. I decided to go to the closest 14er and do a short afternoon trip on Saturday. Mt Evans is just past Evergreen Colorado.

Oct 4, 2008 The sun did come out for 30min. On the downhill side of the road from Mt Evans to Idaho Springs and back to the highway to Denver. The Aspens just come alive with the sunlight.
The trees had lost many of the leaves and the ground was lit with gold.
This photo is just what it is like when the aspens get full sun on them.
The white trunks of the trees are just as stunning as the foliage.

I used my in camera flash to help bring out the white trunk.

In the distance you can see the rain start.
On Sunday I never had much good light. I started out on a longer trip to Guenella Pass just above Georgetown Co. This pass is just wonderful going towards the west up the pass but the power lines from the hydro plant are difficult to get away form. I just like to take mental photos on the up side.
On the down hill side the weather never cleared much so this year I was not able to visit some of the locations I found last year. I will place some old photos just to show you what you can get in good weather. Look for the 2007 date of the photo for my last year photo on Guenella Pass.

What luck I was having,. Big horn Sheep close to the road and fall color. You know that 55-200mmm vr seems a little under-rated.

Parting shot
The snow was starting on the peeks and the sunlight did come out for just a few seconds. I stopped on the dirt road and fired off a few.
Once more I found out that even in bad weather you can still get out there and get some good photos. If I would have stayed at home I never would have seen the sun light hit the aspens and explode in to that fall Colorado Gold.

Lucky you to catch the photos of the animals...what a wonderful surpise for you

It was luck to see the sheep so close and for about an hour. I have been on many many many road trips. Only a few times has everything fall in to place to get some good photos of any animal. The sheep were licking some salty ground and stuck around to have their portraits done.
You know what they say "f8 and be there"
I add some photos from 2007 fall trip on the same road just to show that you can find subjects on this pass worthy of a tank of gas. Hope you like them.
