What a Great Race to Photograph!
I'm an avid runner but have never qualified for Boston ( I live vicariously through my friends that have made the trip!). I followed a couple of people today and conditions seemed pretty hot compared to previous years.
I have photographed many races and I have also had my fair share of difficulties getting the shots I wanted.
Spectators at the marathon
As always happens, I got better shots of spectators than of participants. I think this is because it's a lot harder to shoot action shots than long lens unposed portraits.
A Tip
I'm a veteran marathoner of 30+ years and have a photo of me finishing the Houston Marathon several years ago taken by a pro that is my all time favorite. He timed his shots when both feet were off the ground which put a lot of motion and very little posing in the shots. Made me look faster than I really was. I like your face shots, pain is a part of marathoning. Also, around 20 miles your body is telling you that you shouldn't really be doing this so that's a good place to take photos. Keep shooting at Boston, I hope to be there in a couple of years if my 60 year old body holds up.

I think this might be the winner of the women's wheelchair race. If so, it's the only passable photo I got of a leader.
