.xmp Files

I have a really weird question.
When I download my photos I get a raw file, jpeg and then a white looking .xmp file. Can the .xmp file be deleted and then I just keep the raw and jpeg. I have read that some dump their jpegs, but I like to keep mine to know what the raw is a photo of.
So can I dump them? Just for information purposes....what are they for anyway?
Thanks
