Hi everyone,

Would the Nikon SB50/80DX be a good candidate as a 2nd remote flash triggered by either the built-in pop-up flash on my Nikon D80 or else by the off-camera SB-800?

Basically my plans are:
1. Nikon D80 using built-in pop-up flash to fire SB-800
2. Nikon SB-800 off camera on light stand with umbrella
3. Nikon SB50/80DX (or something relatively cheap) off camera for highlight or background fill - triggered remotely

Which one would work best? SB-80DX or SB-50DX??? I can get SB-50DX here in Switzerland for say 40usd (equiv.) and SB-80DX hopefully relatively cheap from US and then say 25-30USD shippping.

Thanks for all advice
Cheers, Jason

Here is a good write up of the SB50DX, and the SB-80DX. The SB-50dx runs from $50 - 80 here is the US. The SB-80DX runs >$120. You may find a bargain on eBay, but the Strobist, David Hobby, has really made it so that used SB units are still pretty pricey. The eBay listings may be misleading. They start low, but they come up pretty quickly in the last 20 minutes.

You could also look at the SB-26 or SB-28, but you'll need a digital slave trigger since you'll be using wireless TTL to fire the SB-800.

I really think you'd be better off spending your cash on a used SB600 which you could control with the SB-800 on the camera.

Thanks everyone for the info and Seymore - you're right - I had completely stuffed up on the value these things were going for - I didn't find the prices from just completed auctions - my mistake

I think the best option is probably to save the money and buy a 2nd hand SB-600 as is suggested - then I get iTTL on both flashes too

    Thanks for your help :)

    Cheers, Jase
