No clue about prices

I just got back from shooting an event where there were multiple stringers from some different and similar organizations. I tried to discuss pricing with this young girl (yes I'm using "girl' v "gal' or 'woman' due to her inexperience and age.)
She wouldn't comment about it. So I tried, in vain, to disucss, market prices here in Austin for shots for publication, and she had no idea what the going rate was at her publication or other publications in town. I tried to share some info about this and still refused to talk about what she was being paid even though I told her what some typical rates were for the publication she was also shooting for.
My best guess, is that she is so underpaid for her work that she is embarrassed to talk about the rate. She is an artist and not a professional business person.
This is why I'm putting together a course to teach at an art school about business for artists.
So artists! Listen up! Sharing of information is anti-Orwellian and it helps everyone in the local community when every knows what rates are being paid for work. You can be a starving artist or at least pay rent with your trade.
It's called an OPEN MARKET for information.
That said, I'm in a MUCH better position to get a raise for my assignment work when I renegotiate my contract in December as I'll knowing leverage the underpaid girl rate against my new market rate. No! It's not sexist...it could have been a guy doing that work.
She also panned Alien Bees without ever having ever looked at one. Hmmmmmmmm...
Nuff. for now....
