I used to call these small delicate flies fairy flies - around 4 to 5 mm body length until I found out they were small insectivorus muscids - Coenosia species. Busy demolishing a chironomid midge in the shot sequence

My favorite is the 2nd one. I must be a pretty gruesome gal--I really like images of bugs eating bugs.

    Thanks for the comments all.

MMC - yes all taken with an MPE-65 - the fly is a pretty small one.

Phil - first old shot sitting on a plastic sun chair, others the fly was on a rising strut on my aluminium greenhouse at about eye- level.

T-Lee- I was fairly gobsmacked the first time I caught one of these tiny flies eating another fly- I'd always thought they were so delicate looking but it made sense when it was ID'd as a Muscid fly Coenosia species - think the whole family are insectivorus but most of them are a bit nigger than this one.

Ohhhhhhhh my ...... gosh they don't muck around when it comes time to kill and eat do they eek7.gif

The first fly does look very dainty, the next fella sure is making short work of the fly it's caught.

Excellent work as per usual from you Brian thumb.gif ... Skippy :D

Thanks for the comments Skippy- gave me a bit of a shock the first time I saw one of these fairly dainty flies tucking into another fly.
