I considered taking my gear to "fleet week" in San Francisco last weekend but didn't think my lens (70-200) would reach far enough to make a decent capture. What lens are you using?

The F22 while banking is fun to look at, I always enjoy seeing the water vapor on the wings. The first shot has better color and clarity than I usually get with planes, perhaps because the sun more off to the side than in front of you. Was that part of the plan when you decided where to be to take the shots?

These were shot with my Canon XT with a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8. I was standing on the front row of the flight line and just shot when I could get one of these fast moving birds in the viewfinder.

Very well done. Kind of hard to keep up with those beasts when they open it up for a high speed pass.

I am certainly no expert here, but if anything, I'd like to see brighter shots overall.

I saw you took a look at bobcool's shots from another air show. When you said "inferior", I was honestly expecting blurry shots, etc. Not because you're a bad photographer but the way you worded that post! These are great shots, far better than most people who pick up a camera and try could get!

    EDIT:

And after all that fine posting I wrote, I went back, viewed the thread I mentioned and there was your reply at the bottom! Well, good luck next time! The shots above came out great, I feel like I was there! Now we know that 200mm is quite ok, as long as you can get to the right spot!

If something comes near me, I'll have to take my 55-200 out and see what I can get. It's gotta be sunny though, the f5.6 on the long end kills a lot of cloudy shots when high-speed is needed!

*smacks self upside the head for not reading the other thread before posting*

Good work - love the F-22 shot! The vapor off the wings and the glow of the afterburners really capture the power of that amazing jet. Looks like the sun position didn't do you any favors. I know the feeling - I was at several air shows this summer, and I don't think I had the sun behind me once.
