Okay everyone heard my saga, non working 50D and such. Well went and got another and returning the DOA. Took some evening/night football tonight. First time with any type of pro equipment besides my lense (Canon 70-200 2.9L) and ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW!! Thanks for steering me to the 50D!! I knew what I was trying to do with composition but the 3200 ISO , the FPS the FOCUS is AMAZING.. The XT will be used with the Short 2.8 for Cheerleading Closeups etc... I am not a wordsmith and never will be, but man the 50D makes it so much fun it is hard to describe. My Dance pictures with ART lighting are going to be so amazing and the competition lighting are going to rock..

One question on a technical note, don't want anyone to give away any trade secrets but does smug mug notice increased usage/storage when higher MP cameras come out that are as popular as the 50D??

Happy to hear you're happy with your camera. I've yet to take mine out into the wild to see how they perform. Looking forward to the weekend to put them to the test!!!

As for smugmug usage/storage - I suspect they have seen an increase. Over the last couple of years, the max file size allowed to the "Pro" accounts has risen from 16MB to, now, 24MB. I suspect that's in response to the increased pixel density cameras ... which leads to producing larger JPG files. I've got a couple uploaded that approach 20MB.

Scott - A few of my 50D RAW files when exported to JPEG (100% quality) end up at around 14MB, which exceeds the 12MB limit of the standard and power accounts. But so far this has occured only when using Lightroom2. When using Canon's DPP software, the same files convert to jpeg at around 10MB. Andy discovered that DPP was more efficient at this. In any case, I'll be converting in LR at 80-90% quality for the time being to get under the 12MB limit.

Chris, are you using quality 12??? eek7.gif
Lower the quality to 8 (in PS terms), apply some minimal NR (at least color) in ACR/LR - and you'll end up with ~3mb jpeg files, yet I dare you to find the difference in visual quality...deal.gif

NIK - Normally I use around 80% quality when exporting jpegs...but this time I was doing a few exports at full 100% quality for the purpose of printing relatively large (15x22.5 and 10x20) fotoflots. I realize that full quality is probably not necessary, but I figure I didnt have anything to lose...disk space is cheap, so why not go for the least compression possible? I wasn't even aware of the 12MB limit on my account until I attempted this with my new 50D files. I just kept lowering quality until the files sizes dropped under 12MB.

It's no problem really...i just brought it up in response to David's question about disk space demand at smugmug. Surely it's going to increase as megapixel hungry cameras reach the consumer/prosumer masses (50D, etc).

DAVID - glad you are loving your 50D, I am too.
