Info courtesy of Brian Webb:
A Delta II rocket was launched this Friday evening from Vandenberg AFB. The Delta lift-off went as scheduled from Space Launch Complex 2-West, at 19:28:21 PDT during a launch window that is one second long.
The Delta has risen vertically for a few seconds before slowly pitching over and heading south. The booster will later deliver Italy's COSMO-3 satellite into a near-polar orbit. After it becomes operational, COSMO-3 will provide high-resolution radar images of Earth.

Detailed information about the Delta II/COSMO-3 launch is available on the Internet at: http://www.ulalaunch.com/launch/COSMO%203/COSMO3_Mbook.pdf

Rocket Launch as seen from ~120 miles away through a 400mm telephoto mounted on 50D (handheld, ISO3200, 1/25s, f/5.6):

Awesome Nik. You can even make out the tail end of the rocket.

Pretty neat you got to see and photograph this launch! That you managed
handheld with 400mm @ 1/25th sec is something else. Nice job. thumb.gif

    Thanks, guys!
Pyry: this one was supposed to be visible from up to 200 miles.
In fact, if it's a bit earlier and a right humidity you can see some truly magnificent clouds formed by the exhausts...

We at least used to get those on the rare occasion that the winds carried exhaust clouds over from Russia. I'm not sure where those rockets launched from exactly and if they still do it, but I haven't heard of a sighting in years.

Pyry, whats further amazing is that we have seen some rockets
from Vandenberg AFB here in Boise, Idaho. On three occasions I have
observed & photographed once (not the rocket body) thrust discharge
and booster separations. Pretty odd to witness these sightings
especially if you don't know what it is your seeing.
