DavidTO and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Went shooting with Marc. I was 25 feet up on a rock. My strap connector failed. My 40D and 17-40 tumbled down the rock. The camera seems fine (knock wood). The lens, well, you can see. We were in an area that had a recent wildfire, so there was ash all over the place. I was a mess, but my lens has more ash on it that I did! I was scared to clean the ash off myself. I'm sending both in to service, to see if they can fix the lens and to see if the camera has any damage.

Sigh.

    Oh my! Insurance?

The canon hospital will take good care of your lens and body! Mine 20D and 70-200 was actually better when it was repaired!

What strap were you using? Smuggy one?

Yah, but the problem is that it was tied into the hand strap, and that is what failed.

    Ouch!

It is painful to see the pics. Glad you didn't tumble down as well.

(Maybe this is just a good reason to do some lens shopping! B&H opens early tomorrow morning!))

    Thanks, all.

It's really impossible to tell at this point if the glass is scratched. It looks like it's OK, amazingly enough! So, I am hopeful that the repair will happen and not cost TOO much money. And I think the camera just needs a cleaning (crossing fingers).

I actually winced when that photo loaded. I only fell down the stairs today, so your tumble beats mine. deal.gif Glad you're okay. So sorry about the gear!

So it's not just rocks then :smo

Glad to hear you're OK David, as a fellow dropper I'd just like to say, I know what that feels like.

I actually dropped my camera twice in Mull, once when I was getting out of the van, and shortly after again when I decided it would be best to put the camera back in the van, both times from shoulder height onto the road.

    It's not a pleasant experience.

Wow! That hurts looking at it. Hopefully it can be easily repaired. Let us know how it turns out. Can you drive it down to Irvine or do you have to mail it in like the rest of us?

    Ouch, Sorry!
Sorry about your misshap with the camera. Glad you are ok though. Your camera might be there the same time my 40d is. Mine locked up and just quit on me Saturday. I just got mine back last Friday.

    Dave, that sucks :cry

I had a similar experience on the last day of the shoot with my 17-40, luckily it only scratched the glass on the front element.

Ann, I don't think I've ever actually read the book or seen the movie. lol3.gif But I remember the title (it sticks in the brain), and thought it was appropriate.

It was actually a great day, otherwise. I went up to Marc's office to give him a tutorial on Final Cut Pro, and then we went out to this burn area in the San Marcos Pass. It was a nice hike (except for the pesky flies) and a beautiful sunset (aren't they all in their own way?) Topped it off with an awesome dinner and even better beer at the Hollister Brewing Company. thumb.gif

I'd love to get 24ts back, but I'm so short on $$ that it would take months...

Ouch ... at least the most important stuff was okay. I haven't used a 17-40 since I dropped mine off the bowsprit of a tall ship two years ago. I'm sure it's still there, 1,000 feet down and 75 miles off Northern California. I've got the GPS coordinates here somewhere in my notes if you want them ;-)

    Any word on the repairs
    David,
Have you heard from Canon yet on your lens? Is it damaged beyond repair? Is your camera ok?
