on the road
Hi you'll,
There my wife and I were driving along US 95 headed up to Ft. Stewart to pick up my son. It was getting near lunchtime. The closest city to us was St. Augustine and there just happens to be this rookery in St. Augustine. So.....
a snowy egret
a tri-colored heron tends to its eggs
a great egret takes care of some grooming during a rare quiet moment
a little blue heron
a cattle egret

"Just happens to be a rookery"...:lol
Great series Did not realize that the cattle egret was such a colorful bird. I always see them out in the pastures with cattle, but never ventured close. (No desire to be gored by a bull.)

How is it that you are so darn lucky to live near a great birding place and then you leave town and still know where to get great bird shots.

It's better to be hated for who you are than to be loved for who you're not.

That's the first time I ever saw a cattle egret. Thanks.
Delightful and educational series They are all wonderful, showing so much of the "mood" for lack of a better term, of the birds at the time. The baby heron, the pristeen white egret and the cattle bird are quite remarkable. I'm learning about these birds, thanks to the posts by the dgrinners:D

I have been following them, so I will keep it up, but they are not that dramatic.
I mean once you have seen one fish dinner, well, how many bloody fish dinners do we need.
Their babies are either brand new, or very old. They looked like adults with babies. Perhaps they still have eggs. They are up taller than a telephone pole.
I won't know until a baby looks over.
Here is a teaser, out of 400 photos, many good ones, I used the monopod.
I know you have posted just about the same photograph, but I was very excited to get a fish, and in focus, too. I have sooo many more, mostly as a sequence. Kind of like shooting Andy eating dinner.
The difference with me was the "hurry up and wait" factor. I was there a long time, but the male egret was nicer to me this time. And, as you can see, the female just wanted food.
I love your shots, Harry as usual. I hope you and your son are having a good time, or had, whichever. Uh, when are you coming home.
ginger (I finally posted some of my egrets, I just wanted to post........)
And with most people gone, the few of us seem to be giving each other lots of attention.
He just might respond to you, though they are probably busy having a good time.

Thanks and its good to be back.

Thanks and I did miss my Dgrin fix while I was on the road. I hate to spend the $ that could go for some glass but I think I'm going to have to break down and get me a laptop.

I was surprised to see how colorful they get. They always seemed drab to me when I saw them w/o their mating finery on.

Thanks, I am lucky but I do make a few plans when I hit the road. Our passing the rookery at lunch time required a bit of planning.

Hi there Harry great series of bird images, as we have all come to expect from you .......... I got a question for ya .....
I've seen shots and I noticed one of your has it to, and I know I have seen it in shots I have taken too......is....... some birds appear to have like small feathers in and around their mouths why is that is it left over from grooming though in some images those feathers look like they are growing around the mouth if that is so, what purpose do they serve

The rest are great shots, as usual. I love them. The Cattle bird........how could they be with cattle when they need water........or want water, or that seems to be where egrets are anyway?

Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I try to capture the birds in moment when they are doing something. I think it brings them to "life" more than stationary shots.

The trip went well. Linda enjoyed the rookery. Of course, not being into photography she was ready to leave after only an hour. :cry But we had a good time. The place is still amazing. No new chicks have hatched yet but the great egret chicks are beginning to spread their wings and should be trying to fly soon. Little Blue Herons have started to move in and to build nests and the cattle egrets are mating and building nests now too. The tricolor heron and snowy egret eggs sgould be hatching very soon. I was told that there are some wood stork chicks but their nests are in the top of the trees so i couldn't see any.
Thanks. I just wish I had more time on this stop-over
we will have to do something about that.

Hey Skippy,
Those feathers around the mouth are from grooming. It's mating season so they want to look their best.:D

Hey Ginger,
Thanks. The cattle egrets get their name from their hanging out with cattle. They feed off the bugs attracted by the cows daily output. :eat
When they nest and mate they get away from the cows.

I've not seen an egret in several days. Might be time to go back to the
farm...

You've outdone yourself. These just kept getting better and better as I scrolled downward That Cattle Egret is a looker and the Little Blue Heron ain't bad either
Well you missed some awesome landscape shooting, but you kicked some bird butt for sure. That was the bad thing about Yosemite. No herons or egrets :cry
Great stuff, thanks for sharing,
Steve
