I don't know how well lit the event is. If you are shooting at night, ideally you want to shoot wide open at a high ISO. This is why, in my humble opinion, an FX body shines ever-so brightly over a DX body. I know the DX has the crop factor that gives you reach, but do you really care about reach when you don't have enough light?

If it is well-lit, then you'll be laughing. I assume you will need a shutterspeed of 1/1000s or more, hence the FX body would be helpful (i.e. ISO 6400 @ 1/1000s).

You will need the teleconverter to get the reach, so you don't really have an option. What you could try is shots with some motion blur. If allowed to use your flash (don't know for far away you are and don't know what type of flash you have) you could try some rear-curtain sync shots. ne_nau.gif

Yes, I know about the FX vs. DX. I didn't see the use until I started shooting night football games with no flash and the US Open of SX which was indoors. I was really yearning for a D700 then.

Or you could kidnap a member of the press, take their badge and disguise yourself, and hook up to the pre-situated flashes then have around the venue. thumb.gif

Wide-open with the TC-17EII on the 70-200 f/2.8 is f/4.8. For the sharpest images, you need to stop down about 1 stop (or maybe less) from max aperture, so f/5 or f/5.6 is probably best for sharpness. At night, that'll be tough with the D300 and limiting yourself to ISO 1600. If it's for print, sacrifice a little sharpness for shutter speed, or sacrifice a little reach by not using the 1.7x at night.

I am a member of the Press. I get full credentials to every home game. I get to go up in the press box and go anywhere on the field I want. Nobody gets to use anyflash. It sucks.
